T41 running Windows 2k won't BOOT up! Help!

#1 Post by thinkpad_t41_user » Sun Mar 13, 2005 12:50 am

I have a T41 with Windows 2000. It won't start up. When I power on the machine all lights flash initially then the power light and the battery light remain on but nothing happens. Does anyone else have this problem? I've been googling this for the past few hours and nothing is coming up. This has been happening to me everytime I shut down my computer and then try to start up the next day. So I usually just restart my computer and leave it on and let it go on standby mode until the next morning. Otherwise i'll sit there and fiddle for hours with my computer until it works. I've been removing the battery for 30 seconds and then putting the battery back in, then starting it. It works a few times, but isn't guaranteed. Now it hasn't been working all day.

Then, I read that I should remove the battery and ac adapter and then hold down the power button for a few minutes as this would discharge the capacitor. I did this and it worked the first two times. now its not working at all.

Does anyone else have this problem? Please help!

Have you had any major system crashes or error messages (blue screen) lately? I was working with a T41 (a 2379 model) just the other week that had exactly the same problem, with XP as the OS. I never figured out exactly what the problem was, but I am certain it was a hardware issue. It repeatedly went to a blue screen that had a hardware error code on it (sorry, can't recall which one right now). It may have been the HD, maybe the system board. I ran quite a few diagnostics but never could pinpoint the problem. The machine was still under warranty, so it's back at the IBM service center right now. I figured it'd be easier for them to figure it out.

If you have a different HD you could use or borrow, I would start there. Try switching it out and seeing if the machine boots reliably. That might be an easy way to determine if the HD is going bad or if you're dealing with another problem.

Good luck.

I am so frustrated with wasting my time trying to turn it on.. that I just never turn it off anymore. I just put it on standby mode for the night and restart it the next morning.

I will have to talk to the IT guys at work eventually but for now this will do.

Thanks and good luck to you too.
