T40 Not running on battery...

#1 Post by leacris1 » Sun Oct 17, 2010 10:26 am

The T40 in question runs just fine off of an AC adapter.

My first clue something wasn't right was when I noticed the battery wasn't charging. Yes, the battery is good as I have tested it in another machine.

I let it charge overnight and it was still stuck on 0%. The battery indicator light indicates it is charging and the little power icon has the lightning bolt through it, indicating it is charging.

I then put a known good battery, charged to 100%, in the machine and it is correctly shown to be charged to 100% but as soon as I unplugged the power cord the laptop went dead. I tried the power button and nothing at all happens. Plug back in the cord and it starts right up. Take out the batter and it works fine on AC power.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Chris

Check fuses on the systemboard, particularly F9 and F12.

Chris

Further to checking the fuses, I suspect they will all be OK but they do need to be done first.

The problem is that the battery inhibits the AC adapter from powering up the laptop and I'm making a sweeping generalisation by saying the fuses will probably be OK.

This issue has been reported here from time to time but it seems no one has got to the bottom of it: e.g. Similarish fault.

Refer to the T41 Charging Diagram Forum member SMA (I think) posted somewhere on the site, and whihc I've reproduced here, I suspect the issue may be to do with the the Battery Charger chip ADP3806 (can be seen on the Fuses Diagram Sheet 1, the vertically orientated rectangular chip to the right of "F7" label).

I appreciate it doesn't help you much Chris but maybe if someone in US can help you with swapping out the chip / fault finding the fault, it would benefit all of us - and get you up and running too.

Alternatively if anyone in UK / Europe has such a board I'd be very grateful if they could send it to me to investigate.
