Update - 'Missing NTLRD' error with XP?.......

#1 Post by smw6230 » Sun Oct 17, 2010 11:19 am

I doubt I'm the first. Now for some reason XP freezes at the bars and I can't boot to the OS.

It just hangs on loading bars screen just prior to loading OS. While that error doesn't give any prompt itself, after I rebooted I checked some things out and everything worked except when I went to see if Recovery would load (I wasn't actually going to run it), it gave me a missing NTLRD' error along with a prompt to hit ALT+CTL+DELETE to reboot.

I'm thinking that one of the XP boot files got corrupted and that is causing my system to free right before loading.

If that is correct is there any workaround, or program that I can run, to repair a bad or missing XP file?

One point of note this error occured after I installed a new wireless -N card (PCI card). The card worked fine and I shut down the computer several times afterward with no effect.

Also I can run PC Doctor from the CDR, what command should I use to narrow down the specific problem.

Update - Ok, it looks like I have two seperate problems. W/R/T recovery I still get the NTLRD error after pressing F11. I tried to repair it via the MBR repair disk but I still get the NTLRD error.

The second and more pressing problem is the issue with the new wireless PCI card (TL-WN861N). After I removed that XP booted right up with no problem. Now the question is what is causing this problem. Others have used the WN861N card in their A31s without error. Why me :D I used the 'no 1802' disk prior to inserting the new card and everything seemingly functoned well as I turned the computer on and off several times before encountering this error.

Any idea of my error or how I should proceed?

First off, are you sure it really says NTLRD and not NTLDR?
It's a common misapprehension and a common error.

Yeah, that was my fault it was NTLDR. My issue is that my drive boots find its just that if I attempt to use product recovery I get that error. It isn't major as I don't plan to use recovery. But I'm sort of a stickler for detail guy and having something not right bugs the devil out of me.

I plan to purchase a backup HDD anyway, so it looks like the simplest way to rectify this problem would be for me to do a fresh install on that HDD and then use Ultrabay to copy my files over to the new drive with the perfect partitions/files. That should give me a perfect bug free backup drive.

Rather than backing up/copying over, use a program like Acronis TrueImage to take an image of your HD, store that on an external HD.
It is way faster than copying, and restoring is a breeze! (onto any other matching computer/laptop)
