Recovery and Rescue Ver 4.0 Irritation

#1 Post by jsteele » Fri Jun 11, 2004 6:13 pm

I have just installed version 4 (after removing v 3 of course) on my T40 and ran the base backup without a problem. I then tried to use Create Rescue Media to use a 20GB USB drive in a 2.0 external housing.

I plugged in the USB and it was recognized fine as drive D: Using Disk Management I changed the drive letter to Y: for administrative reasons. I then started Create Rescue Media and after selecting USB it had an error trying to use the former drive letter D:. I unplugged the USB, restarted the T40 to get everything "back to square one".

After WinXP restarted I plugged in the drive again, which was recognized correctly as drive Y:, and tried gthe Create Rescue Media again. Now on every attempt I get an error that "Create Rescu Media: Process failed. Resources required by this application are already in use. Please retry after the other application completes".

I have rebooted, I deleted and recreated and reformatted the partition on the USB drive, all to no avail. Every time I try to Create Rescue Media I get the same error. BTW, I can get the same error if hte USB is not even plugged in so it doesn't look like it has anything to do with the drive!

Anyone seen this and know how to correct it? In the meantime I created a CD rescue without a problem. And, I have been able to copy files to the USB drive and even able to use the Rescue v 4 option to copy the backup to the USB. Just for some reason the Create Rescue Media refuses to use the drive.

Recovery and Rescue Ver 4.0 Irritation - Followup

#2 Post by jsteele » Fri Jun 11, 2004 7:26 pm

Just followingup on a few items.

First, I waited about an hour and tried again and it worked OK this time. The startup materials were copied to the hard drive OK and I successfully copied the backup set to the USB hard drive as well --- only problem is it doesn't make any difference since my T40 won't boot from a USB hard drive :-(

I was able to boot from the recovery CD and get to the Rescue interface. However, the restore does not see the backup set on the USB hard drive even though USB Dard Drive is a location option on the restore menu!

I'll keep trying, but so far its [censored] frustrating.

Recovery and Rescue Ver 4.0 Irritation - Yet More

#3 Post by jsteele » Sat Jun 12, 2004 12:13 pm

Well, more "progress" on my quest for USB backup. The boot from USB hard drive was fixed by changing the BIOS configuration to actually allow F12 to select alternate boot device. Then I was able to select the USB HDD.

That was the good news, the bad news is that part way through the process I get a Blue Screen of Death with a STOP 0x00000079. The USB HDD was properly formatted and set Active in Disk Management. The Create Rescue Media was successful and the Copy Backup to USB was also successful.

Leon:

Will do.

Does anyone know why in the boot device list the USB HDD has a minus sign in front of it? For example "USB Floppy", "IDE0", "-USB HDD"
