Ultrabay 2000 Drives for Ultrabase X4

#1 Post by Eule » Sun Mar 13, 2005 10:25 am

Hi all,

i'm thinking about buying a thinkpad x40 or a x41 when it comes out (i'm not in rush :-)). So i also looked for docking possibilities and was quite unsatified with the optional drives from ibm for the dock (2x DVD-Burner) and especially the price! So i looked up ebay and saw somebody selling the frame of the ultrabay drives for a normal notebook slim-cd/dvd-drive. Does anybody have experiences with those things? cause i would then buy a 8x dvd-burner and a frame. which wouldn't be about more than ~200 Bucks.

here a german ebay Link:http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie ... 34756&rd=1

addition: just found out that x4 docks use a new drive standard, ultrabay slim drives which are smaller than the ultrabay 2000 drives. does anybody know if those drives are especially made for ibm or if they are also built into newer other notebooks. hopefully somebody here has already tried or even successfully built a non-ibm drive into a ultrabase :-)

Dimensions of ultrabay 2000 drives:

Height: 15mm
Width: 131mm
Depth: 145mm

Dimensions of ultrabay slim drives:

9.5mm
128mm
129mm
