T40 Ethernet Connection problem

#1 Post by thinkpad321 » Fri Oct 22, 2010 3:13 am

Hi

T40
Win XP sp3

My Ethernet cable is plugged into my T40s, but I can't get an internet connection. I know the cable works because when I connect the same cable to my other computer, I can get an internet connection.

On the T40, with the Ethernet Cable connected, I can't get an internet connection (Page cannot be displayed messages appear etc).
The little light by the Ethernet jack on the T40 is off.

I know the hard drive has Ethernet drivers installed because If I insert the hard into my other T40, it connects to the internet.

Please help me trouble shoot this problem.

Thank you

Check BIOS, if the LAN adapter is enabled there.
Current: T420
Previous: T400, T43p Flexview, T40, R52, T43p 14"
My first ThinkPad was 570

Thanks for responding

The LAN adapter is enabled in the BIOS.

What do I do now to further trouble shoot?

Thanks

If you used to get an Internet connection but now you can't, it could be the southbridge
unsoldering itself because of heat. The southbridge is the large chip under the WiFi card.
Remove the palmrest and the wifi card push down on the chip and start the computer.
If you can connect with pressure applied then you know where the problem lies.
You'll need a reflow or a new motherboard to fix it.
I hope it's not that, but there are many posts here with the same issue and the same solution.
