Backing up a T40 80GB HDD to an ultrabay 60GB HDD

#1 Post by baertracks » Sun Mar 13, 2005 1:38 pm

I currently have a T40 (2372AU1) with an 80GB 5400rpm hard drive. I would now like to expand my hard drive capacity AND upgrade speed by adding a 60GB 7200rpm using an Ultrabay (Slim) HDD Adapter. I would also like to be able to boot from this second drive. With that in mind here are my questions:

1) Would there be any compatibility problems in running a 80GB 5400rpm and a 60GB 7200rpm in the same machine (and in backing up from the primary to secondary drive) ?

2) I understand that the Ultrabay HDD adapter comes with software to mirror the primary drive to the backup drive. Must the drives be the same size (and speed) in order to mirror? Will I be able to mirror my primary drive OS and then boot from the secondary drive? Or, will I have to install an OS separately on the new drive?

3) Once I backup everything to the new drive I then plan to swap the drives to use the 60GB drive as my primary drive and use as the 80GB for Ultrabay backup. Do you see any problems with doing this?

4) Which hard drive do you recommend? Are there other models in addition to the Hitachi TravelStar 7K60 (08K0939) which is selling for around $145.

Thanks for your assistance!

1) No
2) I guess you talk about Apricorn´s Ez-Gig cloning software. It should work fine, but I think you need a fdd. Try IBM Rescue & Recovery :

3) No
4) The 80GB Fujitsu MHT2080AH drive is excellent.

I think the Apricorn software CANNOT "downsize" the partition. I wanted to do exactly the same thing, but my research (which included talking to Apricorn support) said that it will not be able to do the conversion from 80GB to 60GB even if there isn't < 60GB of data on the 80GB drive.
T60p (200784U) - standard (no upgrades... yet)
