"HOW" to purchase an IBM

I'm planning on buying a T42. I've read a few post here that seems to lead me thinking that I might get a slightly better deal if I called in and spoke to a rep. The machine that I priced out came out to be $1700:

1.7Ghz 2MB cache
14.1" SXGA 512MB
9600 video card

Any input on how the majority of you guys bought your thinkpad? I'd like to stick with IBM website or rep due to the authenticity and the thought of it coming frome the factory.

Also, I'm somewhat unclear on the UltraSlim battery. Is there where you can replace ur CD-RW/DVD-ROM with a secondary battery? If so, is it worth it to purchase it thru IBM for $119?

any thoughts would be greately appreciated.

In my view you are best off buying from IBM where you have a 30 day return period and price protection. Check the discount sites that apply to you in my FAQ and then call IBM.

In my view, the ultra-slim battery is not worth it. It provides about half the power of a standard 6-cell battery. I just got a second 6-cell battery for when I need it.
