Anybody selling X100e with windows XP? (UK if poss.)

#1 Post by peter-h » Sat Oct 23, 2010 9:55 am

I have some odd software which doesn't work on win7...

How does the X100e compare with the x60s? I've had a x60s for 3 years and it is super, but I would like something a bit smaller.

I don't think any of the Thinkpads display colours well but that's the tradeoff.

If you get the X100e with Windows 7 Pro, you could run your old software under XP Mode, ie. virtualised.

Cheers,

I don't doubt one could just install XP on this laptop, and then upgrade online as usual to SP3 and the 20GB of M$ updates :)

The Q is whether XP, off the install CD, will support all the hardware without problems.

In particular I might be looking at the machine with the GPRS/3G radio which is possibly a Sierra chip like the x60s had. One would hope there is an XP driver for this. On my x60s I unlocked it using DC-Unlocker (it was locked to Voda$$$e) and then used the Thinkpad Access Connections prog to connect to the internet.

One area where win7 causes problems for old software is where programs store password and similar data in c:\windows or c:\program files (yeah I know this is lousy practice) and win7 doesn't allow that. I know people who have tried to install the actual program I use on win7 and some worked and some didn't...

However, I have just been comparing specs and the x100e is exactly the same size as the x60s, and you can get a nearly new top-spec dual-core x60s for about £300 now, from various "refurbished" vendors. And, from reviews, both machines have an equally naff colour screen quality.

If you're interested in buying a X100e, I have one that is two months old, and little used. It's single core with 160GB, and 2GB RAM, with XP Home, and dark red in colour. I live in Birmingham (UK). The screen is too small for my eyesight.

Very sorry Robert; I spotted this a few hours too late... I bought a "nearly new" (we shall see...) x60s-1702 from a seller on Ebay, for about £300. I can't see much difference between a x60s and a x100e, and they are the same overall size. The x60s is dual core.

I think you are probably better off with the X60s. Mind you, I would have sold my X100e for £220!
