T60p brightness of the screen

#1 Post by Bart77 » Mon Oct 25, 2010 3:58 am

Hello

I just received my T60p with SXGA+ flexview screen. The quality of the computer is really impressive, but I'm disapointed about the screen - it is much more darker than my classic LCD - please look at the below photo made by my mobile phone. T60p was working on the battery. So my question is if such a differenc is usual or my flexview screen is broken? Is it question of the screen or some other components like for exapmle inverter? I just bought UXGA 1600x1200 screen on ebay, but I'm not sure if it will help. Once T60p is connected to electricity socket, the brightness is only a little bit better. Please advise.

It's the backlight. They dim over time. The LG SXGA+ IPS, which you probably have, is more prone to this and yellowing too. A new UXGA screen should be much better/brighter. You can replace the backlight and it's a cheap part, but a pain in the rear job.

Also, keep in mind that by default the screen dims on battery (you need to set LCD Brightness = High in the BIOS to avoid it).

And even new and bright, most laptop LCDs will be dimmer than desktop LCDs, since they use inherently weaker backlights to save power.

Thanks for reply. So are you sure that this is problem of the backlight, not inverter ?

This is the same problem I had with my T60. I am not sure why this happens, but the T60 panel was actually dimmer than my 2 year older T43 Flexview panel. And I did the same thing as you are planning to do; replace it with a BOE-Hydis UXGA panel. I reused my old inverter.

I took some pictures to show the difference it made: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=90382

Thanks a lot. It seems that you had the same problem. However maybe it is worth to change inverter at the same time once the LCD screen will be taken out.

T60p. Exact same issue. The screen looks like is worn out from time.

I might look into replacing light in the future if it keeps getting worse.

My classmate's T60 is with 15.1 UXGA , The screen is also daker than the usual 14.1 screen , that is the defect of wide-angle U screen.
The problem is probably the backlight tube is near its lifetime , change a new one just about 8.5$ , you buy the dealer's new one and they will chang it for you .
