Found early beep code info: still uncertain of prob w/760ED
Found early beep code info: still uncertain of prob w/760ED
Here is the latest in the sad saga of my non-booting 760ED:
I found info on IBM beep codes for early BIOSes, which I am posting here, at the end of this post, in case anyone else has problems similar to mine.
IBM BIOS Beep Codes (early systems, date uncertain)
none=Power supply or motherboard completely damaged
continuous=Motherboard severely damaged
short=Normal POST run, system is in order
2x short=POST error, text of the error message displayed on the screen
short…repeats continuously=Power supply or motherboard damaged
Long, short=Motherboard
Long, 2x short=Video adapter (MDA, CGA)
Long, 3x short=Video adapter (EGA)
3x long=3270 Keyboard adapter
As you can see, the codes must be very early, judging from the video adapter info. However, I think it's not unreasonable to assume that the codes for some of the other components would remain the same, even for later BIOSes. Consequently, it appears that the problem with my 760 may be either the power supply or the mother board, as the beeps are short and repeat continuously. Although there is the added confusion of this problem only occuring when the AC adapter is used. When I try to boot with the battery only, it still is no go, so perhaps the problem with the AC somehow put it into suspend or hibernation, from which I cannot return with a bad AC adapter??? Does that sound reasonable to those of you here who seem to know these systems inside and out?
I haven't posted the entire symptomology of the 760, as I don't want to repeat material that I have already posted.
Also, I realize that for a few posts I was remiss in not thanking the people of this board enough for their assistance in trying to unravel the mystery of my non-booting 760ED. I confess I was so focused on trying to find the answer to the problem, that I forgot my manners. My thanks and apologies to those of you who tried to assist.

Hey, if you would like, you can send me the 760ED + paid postage of some sort to use when shipping back and something on the side for profit (what that is can be negotiated), I'll tear the thing to scraps and build you a working 760. This is assuming you're unable to figure out whats wrong and/or figure out that the thing is broken on the hardware side.

Thanks, Alpha, but I'm looking forward to rebuilding it...
myself, actually. I've torn apart my desktop several times and put it back together, so if I can determine exactly what is the problem, I probably can manage to fix it. (That's why I ask all these questions.)
That said, I admit I'm operating at a decided disadvantage (several actually): I am limited money-wise; I don't have internet access at home, making researching the problem extra difficult; I don't have tools or another 760 in order to test the components, and although I was able to rebuild my desktop, I can't claim that my skills are anything like those of many on the site here. But I am persistent...
I do appreciate the offer though. Thanks.

Hey, nerdette, are you still having trouble with your ThinkPad? I just upgraded my 760 and have a coupe parts leftover now including a motherboard and videoboard that if you want, we could make a deal for. If replacing those two things don't fix your computer, nothing will.

I have a 760XD motherboard (password protected before I got it, no clue ow to remove password) and I have a 760E motherboard. The XD board has the XGA BIOS and the E motherboard has the SVGA BIOS. I also have two 760E 1mb video boards for the thin base 760E (should work in a ful height, but you'll have to jerryrig a few connections, I'll see if it's possible later), a 2mb 760E video board for an XGA system (won't work in SVGA systems) and a 760ED 2mb video board (SVGA 760ED's only, works only in an ED). Other parts I have include sound boards and I have one or two 133mhz cpus as well as a 120 I could let go. I have tons of other 760 parts as well as lot's of plastic pieces. Ask me if ou want to know any more specifics.

Yes, that is in fact the enhanced video card from a 760ED. The XD card and ED card are distinguishable by the fact that the xd card lacks the metal shield and has a fan.
unfortuneatley, I don't have a motheboard for it. I do however, have a 760E motherboard and video card I'd be willing to make a deal for. First, I need to know so I can gather the correct parts, the 760 you are building, is it a full height (room for a cd drive) or a thin (no room for cd drive) 760?

I still have three bottom cases and they will all accept a CD rom drive. The one I built today has one in it right now. Seems like I need that enhanced video card from you to finish this one. I don't have the skill to try and solder the connector back on.
That 760E board will take from a 120 MHz to a 150 MHz processor but will it take a 166 MHz. I have two of them plus two 133 MHz and one 120 MHz left.
Have you had the board booted up to windows.

I've never booted my enhanced video board to Windows since i don't have a motherboard that seems to support it, so trading that is strictly as-is. That's also why I'm offering a 760E mobo/videoboard combo s well. The 760E mobo/video I have is not quite as nice, but will take any of your CPU's (I have a 760E mobo in my 166mhz FrankenPad) and the mobo i'd be sending you is guaranteed non-doa.
Also, any 760 mobo (except L, LD, C and CD) will take anywhere from a 100mhz CPU to a 166mhz CPU. People say 166mhz is impossible below the 760XL, XD a 765, but with the exception of video and sound, my FrankenPad is primarily 760E parts, mobo included, yet it has an XD's 166 cpu.
