What would be a fair price for this T40?

#1 Post by BruceDickinson » Sat Oct 30, 2010 4:46 pm

I took a chance on Craigslist with a T40 that I've come to find has video problems. Sometimes the video works, most of the time not. When the video doesn't work on the built-in LCD, it also doesn't work on an external monitor. Pressing on the GPU seems to help.

The LCD seems to work fine and is in good shape. Keyboard seems nice. Exterior looks very good. Specs are:

P M 1.5Ghz
512 MB (2 x 256 MB)
Radeon 7500
CD/DVD
Wireless B Mini PCI card
Ultra Bay floppy drive and case
no hard drive
no metal bracket part of the caddy
battery seems totally dead
a mismatched charger (83H6339)

I'm not sure I feel like getting involved w/ a GPU reflow or other repair possibilities, so I might try to sell it.

But is this thing even saleable? If so, what's a fair price? Thanks very much.

IMHO, $40 would be a reasonable asking price. If you like T40's and are interested in a T41 with an Intel GPU let me know. Here's the Ad.

I might even consider a trade - in.

How much did you pay for it? I don't know how much the reflow costs now or how reliable the vendors are but the computer is pretty worthless as it stands (maybe $30-$40 for the working parts). The T40 is 7 years old now - the display is living on borrowed time.

Thanks for the input, Harryc and sktn77a. Fortunately, your estimates aren't too much less than what I payed for it.

And Harryc--thanks for pointing me to that T41/R51. I don't think I'm in the market for a 15" Thinkpad (since I already have a 15" T42 that works great).
T520 4242-AA7 (15.6", FHD)
T60/61 Frankenpad (15", UXGA)
T60p 2008-93U (15", UXGA)
T60 Schwabenpad (14", XGA)
...& others

That's actually a typo in Harry's FS ad...the machine in question is a 14" unit...

Good catch, thanks George. Yes it's a 14" T41.
