What are known good undervolting values for Banias 1.6 (T40p
What are known good undervolting values for Banias 1.6 (T40p
This is the factory original cpu for a T40p. I'd like to undervolt it slightly to control fan noise and heat, but not to the bleeding or optimized edge - corrupted files, hangs and crashes are not interesting experiments for this purpose.
Anyone know what reasonable undervolting is (if there is such a thing) for the various speed steps available in NHC? Should those be different values for battery and AC operation?
I see there's a fan control module, which could also address the noise issue with the tradeoff or running a little hotter (+4 degrees C should not be significant) but it appears to require proficiency in writing code and I am not familiar with that.
-- thx

atanasoff, I'll give you some numbers I use but ultimately you'll have to see if they work for you. What I've done is find voltage levels where the PC is stable then upped them a little as a 'safety' margin.
Start with .748v
end with 1.228v
The voltage can be incremented evenly as you progress through the numerous processor speed steps.

Well, yours is a more tolerant than mine. 800mhz and .860v freezes after a few hours with a unique error I only see when undervolting - GDI error. It passed an hour of NHC tests, but normal use seem to be more severe than tests - probably due to various factors not included in the test. It's about time to swap cpus - I have a Dothan to swap in but have been delaying on installing it as I don't have a backup machine right now.sojourner wrote:atanasoff, I'll give you some numbers I use but ultimately you'll have to see if they work for you. Swapping out a CPU doesn't take more than 10-15 minutes, just remove keyboard, palmrest and CPU cooler.
Don't forget to clean off the old thermal past, and apply fresh paste (Arctic Silver 5) sparingly.

Huh. I printed out the manual pages, which made it look like a much bigger job. A few screws and 15 min --- trivial. I think I'll try it this weekend. btw ... palmrest is cracked, can you reccomend a supplier to get a replacement?RealBlackStuff wrote:Swapping out a CPU doesn't take more than 10-15 minutes, just remove keyboard, palmrest and CPU cooler.

On eBay.
The palmrests are the same for all T40/T41/T42 machines (T43 is different).
There's a difference between 14.1" and 15" keyboard bezels.
91P8398 or 62P4247/62P4249 palmrest with touchpad
91P8399 palmrest without touchpad
