Dead graphic card on T61

#1 Post by sponka » Thu Nov 04, 2010 11:21 am

Hello!

Have T61 which recently gone mad and all I can get on main display are 2 horizontal lines. Fortunately, VGA port is working without problem and since all rest is working OK I am using external monitor.

It's 6459-CTO with quadro NVS 140M which is (IIRC) same as nvidia 8400 and as such problematic.

So, is graphic card dead or is still some chance that something else is gone since VGA is working OK?

Thanks,
b.

The only way to be sure is to try a different screen

Got reply from service -- dead LCD. That's good news. Bad part is, that replacement cost 300 euros (parts & labour, taxes included). :(

Yes, VGA out working meant the graphics is working. If you're at all handy you can replace the screen yourself, either a new one, a used one or one from a unit you buy for parts (I took my T60 apart a few days ago, it wasn't too difficult). Lenovo's service videos for the T61 are here:

Click on FRU Removals/Replacements, then LCD.

Not necessarily, especially not on a nVidia-based T61/p.

Hmm. I just bought a T61. They told me to NOT get nVidia based, and I got Intel based. I have been running nVidia cards in my desktops for years, however. Had the fans die in a few but not recently.

The T61 nVidia chips are just a rotten design with built-in faults, and WILL all fail.

I am totally glad I checked here before buying my T61 on November 1st. I was really close to buying a T61 with nVidia graphics when I posted here and was sternly warned to run the other way! I have been subscribed here for quite some time but didn't hang out here because my email notifications were not working. There was something screwed up in my user CP in the forum, nothing on my end (the data there was weird somehow and I wasn't able to fix it, even Bill Morrow howled!). Anyway, my notifications are coming now by way of a reroute of an alternate email address. Set that up about a week ago. I hope these forums don't go down!
