External Monitor Issue with Changing Resolution

I set my external monitor's resolution to 1600x1200 and set the output to monitor only.

Then I close the laptop lid and then it's fine, when I open the lid, the output is set to monitor and laptop and resolution goes back to XGA.

How do I keep the resolution and output regardless of what I do with the lid?

Make sure your BIOS is up to date. IIRC some BIOS updates correct issues such as this. You can check the readme text file for the latest BIOS and it's summary of changes to see if any of the updates address such issues.
