keyboard keys malfunction

Hi im new to the forum so be gentle, i have a problem with some of the keys on my think pad its an old t43 but its held together quite well anyway when i try and do this ( @ <<<copy and pasted ) instead of the ( at ) sign i get this ( " ) whats that all about any solutions would be mostly appreciated,,,as you can imagine having to go back to your email account in order to copy the sign ,,,also some sites wont allow you to right klick on them so im snookred anyway im off to bed please anybody that can leave me info would be great ,,,i know a little about p/c,s so i should be able to follow any info
