The volume and mute buttons on the machine are not working. Do I need drivers, which ones?

ThinkPad W520: i7-2760QM @ 2.40GHz ~ 20GB RAM ~ 500GB Samsung 850 EVO SSD ~ 2GB NVIDIA Quadro 2000M ~ FHD+ @ 1920x1080 ~ Win 10 Pro x64.
ThinkPad T520: i5-2520M @ 2.50GHz ~ 8GB RAM ~ 250GB Samsung 850 EVO SSD ~ Intel HD 3000 ~ FHD+ @ 1920x1080 ~ Ubuntu 16.04 x64.
