#1 Post by madhu » Mon Nov 08, 2010 12:41 pm

Hi,
My existing T42 is broken, so planning to buy a new laptop (thinkpad again)
Could you please advise on which one is a good choice/more reliable between

It is a good idea to look at the T410/T510 section, and the W510 section, of these forums. There you can read about the sort of problems that people encounter. Whether you can live with those problems is up to you.

I have been very happy with my T510, if that is any help.

When you don't say anything about what you want or need, it's kind of hard to help.

Thanks for the replies.

Purpose :
What I need is a General Purpose laptop, I don't run any video editing/Video processing applications. I also don't do gaming. But I run some database software on it at times, for testing purposes.

Price : Around $1500

I was leaning towards W510 but found some negative information (liked BSOD's etc)

T410, T510 and W510 are in many ways very similar. T/W510 are essentially the same laptop, the difference being that W510 is available with quad-core CPUs and 4 RAM slots, and a more powerful video card. In your case both seem to be a waste of money and battery life, so you should probably look into the T series (unless you see some serious need in USB3.0 in your future, which only W510 has).

Betwen T510 and T410, the latter is smaller and lighter, whereas the former offer higher resolution screens (1600x900 or even 1920x1080 compared to 1440x900 max in T410). It is said that then general quality of the screens on the T510 is somewhat higher too.
Current: X220 4291-4BG, T410 2537-R46, T60 1952-F76, T60 2007-QPG, T42 2373-F7G
Collectibles: T430s (IPS FHD + Classic Keyboard), X32 (IPS Screen)
Retired: X61 7673-V2V, A31p w/ Ultrabay Numpad
Past: Z61t 9440-A23, T60 2623-D3U, X32 2884-M5U

I would also add that while the screen on the T410 is pretty poor in terms of contrast ratio and viewing angles, the rest of the machine is (IMHO) an excellent functional successor to the T4x series. Personally I don't like the appearance as much as the T4x series, but that's a matter of personal preference. In terms of durability and portability I'd rank it right up there with IBM's finale.
