strangest internet connectivity problems ever

#1 Post by gene303 » Mon Nov 08, 2010 4:08 pm

I have t410s which has some strange inet connectivity issue(s).

When it comes out of standby or hibernate it connects to a network and reports internet connectivity. However, I cannot connect or ping any sites. Even trying to ping google dns (8.8.4.4 and 8.8.8.8) fails. Skype however seems to log on. After about 5-10 minutes I will gain normal internet connectivity.

Alternatively, I can log off my user and log back in to restore full inet fast. This is really annoying as you might imagine. Please help.

Does it help to do the following?

Code: Select all

ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
W520: i7-2720QM, Q2000M at 1080/688/1376, 21GB RAM, 500GB + 750GB HDD, FHD screen & MB168B+
X61T: L7500, 3GB RAM, 500GB HDD, XGA screen, Ultrabase
Y3P: 5Y70, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, QHD+ screen

Colonel,

Have tried to flush the DNS and it did not help. I will try to register the DNS next time it happens. However, I believe it to be some sort of gateway routing issue. I don't think DNS is an issue, if it were, then I'd be able to ping 8.8.8.8, but I cannot. Therefore, I have to assume that DNS resolution is not the issue.

This could be a power management issue. Try these settings to see if it makes a difference.
Device manager, advanced properties, power options for the WiFI adapter, select maximum performance
Power Manager, advanced settings for the current profile, setting for Wirelss adapter power saving mode. Set to max performance on AC and battery.

Harryc,

I think its possibly something to do with the Wifi chipset. It seems that eventhough wifi is working and enabled, I cannot see it in the power manager. Interestingly, when i bring up Fn + F5 it doesnt allow me to enable/disable the wifi chipset. I bet it will when i reboot.

Yes, but that would be what you'd see if power management had shut the adapter down. Please reboot and try my suggestion. Then go into standby and tell us what happens.

Harryc,

Thanks again for the suggestion. I unchecked the following: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/413650/Untitled%20picture.png
However, my power management seems to be missing options for the wifi adapter: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/413650/Untitled%20picture2.png

That's because you've selected the maximize performance profile already. Try standby after changing only the device manager setting.

This sounds familiar to issues I had very early with Lenovo supplied wifi drivers for my T400.
Try installing the WLAN drivers from the Intel driver site and see if that fixes the issue. The Intel drivers used to work for me. Now both the Lenovo and Intel supplied drivers work.

Harryc,

This has helped somewhat, but its not perfect yet. Now, when i come out of standby or sleep I cannot log onto any networks for about a minute. It says that it fails connecting. Then, after the second fail message, it connects.

Colonel,

Thats a good idea, I'll give a try. It's just a pain in the butt to jump through these hoops. this is my 4th thinkpad and I've never had this type of trouble with power management or wifi. Must be a lenovo thing ...

Guys,

This "fix" is not working. What's really strange is that disabling and re-enabling the adapter doesn't help. Neither helps when I do it physically with the hardware power switch for wifi nor does it help when i disable the network adapter from control panel.

Strangely enough, logging out of my windows session and back in as my user, does help.

Please help. I welcome all ideas.

One thing that I had forgotten to mention is that I have the same problem when I login to the T-mobile network using a huawei usb dongle.
