T410 Stand-on-top test

People are whining about the cancellation of LCD lid rollcage. I've done a test on the lid myself and it turned out to be completely okay.

That said, however, 62kg isn't too much, but from what I saw, it looks like it could take a fair bit more; the frame didn't buckle nearly as much as I expected it to. The cracking isn't a good sound though.

Well I stood on my R400 as well (which has a LCD lid rollcage) and there were cracking sounds too,although a little bit less

Cancellation of LCD lid rollcage? when does this cancellation start? I just ordered one last week, will the one I ordered include a rollcage? why would they cancel it?

All T410's use ABS plastic for their lid structure; there is no magnesium-alloy plate in it like in the T400 nor a magnesium-alloy outer shell like the T60. That said, it uses a different concept for maintaining the structural integrity of the lid under pressure; the deformation absorbs the energy of impact or weight and prevents it from damaging the screen. Earlier ThinkPads weren't able to exploit this manner of reinforcement due to the fact that display technology was primarily CCFL based. Deformation had a higher chance of snapping the CCFL tube. Now that we've moved on to LED, the room for deformation has significantly increased, and this method of building lid structures is more cost-efficient and doesn't impede wireless signals as much. That said, the T510 has a carbon-fibre based rollcage in the lid, which I figure is just due to the increased size and different aspect ratio (it was either that or increase the lid thickness more had they wanted to use ABS plastic too).

Probably the deformation thing again allowing for more creaking because parts are bending rather than being forced to hold as with the R400.

T410 lid is made of HEPC, High Elasticity Polycarbonate, not ABS plastic, according to Lenovo tabook.

Ah. I stand corrected. The R500 lid was made of ABS plastic. If it wasn't the R500, then I probably need to get my head checked out

Coinciding with what I said about the design of the T410 lid, it is just as capable as older Thinkpads at withstanding pressure to the lid without damage to the LCD... Engineering wins again.
