Add fingerprint reader to older model?

#1 Post by ZPrime » Mon Mar 14, 2005 9:47 pm

I remember discussion a while ago about trying to add the reader to a machine that doesn't have one. Did anyone figure out if it is tied in to the touchpad/ultranav or if it uses its own plug and such?

I actually have a T42 with one on it now, and if nobody else has investigated, I will see if I can get the time to crack it open and take a look.

We had a discussion about this recently. It comes down that uses same plug as touchpad and we´d got excited with the news...
However, later on we discover that IBM makes distintion on motherboards depending if laptop has the reader or not. I still think there is so hope, but chances is that the board is different.
X220t IPS but but a bit unhappy with it
T60p 2007-93U 1600x1200 IPS (T42p is an overall better machine though. Lack of new IPS Thinkpads keeps me buying these older models!)
T42p 2373-KXU 1600x1200 IPS (The best ever!!)
A20p 2629-6UU 1400x1050 (My first Thinkpad!)

will not work with T41, T42 which had no finger print in the first place.

with T43's they have the same motherboard between finger print and no fingerprint models ( looking at the parts / hardware maintenance manual )

so you might be able to upgrade a T43 by changing the palmrest, it may be necessary to change the hard drive housing also , to accomodate the thickness of the fingerprint reader.

It might be better to buy it with machine from IBM, considering the price of the part around $150, and then trying to change the hardrive housing, so that it wont bulge or develop any stress.

I saw a PCMCIA fingerprint reader. It's made by Billionton.

As said by Edelrc, there might be a hope. It seems like there might a software control rather than actual hardware for the finger print option.
If someone has both fingerprint and non fingerprint systems available, somethings can be verified.

IBM (Lenovo) sells a USB finger print reader as well - it's like $50 if you want the extra device to lug around...

They also sell a keyboard with fingerprint reader (FPR). MS apparently has a mouse with one ... and Lenovo claims to have one, but the photo doesn't indicate *where* the darn thing is on the mouse body.
