What to Call T40p With R52 Board Inside?
What to Call T40p With R52 Board Inside?
When my T40p board died recently, I replaced it with one from an R52. Both have 64Mb ATI graphics. Along with the board came the R52 modem, wireless, cpu, and ram. The PC card cage is from a T43. The case has T40p identification on the outside, but I need a way to indicate its new properties to avoid confusion. How about a label stuck on the palm rest that simply states "R52 Board Inside?" Surely there are others here who have faced this issue and dealt with it previously.

Some of us that have done the Intel R51 mobo in a T4x refer to it as a TR451. I suppose you could go with TR452! It may not be clear exactly what's inside, but I'd understand it as an R52 mobo in a T4x machine.
Or, how about TR452p - I think that would narrow it down a little better.
Furthermore, if you slice and dice enough clear plates, you can actually label it as such and replace the T40p clear plate.
(Nice work, by the way.)

Thanks, and yes, it was reading that thread that gave me the info needed to make the swap. I decided to use the ATI board because the latest ones appear to have the chips bonded more securely with epoxy, and also a heat spreader plate on top. The original fan seems to fit nicely, and has a bit of AS underneath. If it will last as long as the original board (~3.5 years) that will be long enough.
I've decided it will be called "T40p w/ R52 board inside," and a label to that effect affixed to the palm rest. Otherwise there would be confusion next month when I try to remember what kind of ram to buy.

I have complete shell and FlexView LCD from T43 (with T43 label next to the status LEDs and T43's machine type on the bottom labels) but equipped with T43p motherboard. I am simply presenting this computer as T43p altough there wasn't T43p with 15" SXGA+ LCD in IBM's production

I call my T40 with R51 board a "FrankiePad"
(name suggested by RealBlackStuff
)
Combination of my nickname and "FrankenPad" (from Frankenstein monster)

Re: What to Call T40p With R52 Board Inside?
Well, you guys are way smarter than I am. I had to learn the hard way that the ATI board would not last long driving a 1920 x 1080 external monitor. It overheated and the video broke up into numerous small rectangles. So, back to ebay for an Intel board. That swap went quite smoothly, primarily because I was feeling adventurous and had plenty of good info from this forum. Items modified:
Fan -- two metallic mesh covered foam pads were removed from the top, two small metal tabs on top were removed by breaking them off with pliers, and the 3 post holes in the heat sink were enlarged slightly by drilling so that the shorter posts from the T40p heat sink could be swapped in.
Magnesium alloy strut on the left side -- one small square tab and one triangular tab were removed by breaking off with pliers. Then a good deal of material was removed from the lower face and from the right face in order to clear the new fan.
Had to try plugging in the T40P's SXGA+ display just to confirm that it would not work with the R52 Intel board. Then the XGA lcd unit was swapped into the T40p display assembly. Disappointingly, the Thinklight is now amber instead of white.
So far, the Intel board drives the 1920 x 1080 display uneventfully without overheating. Will inform if that changes.
Two other interesting observations: First, Ubuntu has a utility called checkbox that runs some diagnostics. It reported the Intel graphics chip type, and that it had the ability to drive a 4096 x 4096 max display.
Second, while the lcd was out of the display shell, I noticed that the shell was marked "MgALZN Made in China." It's magnesium, not titanium!
Oh, the R52 was listed as a 1.4 Celeron. The type number was 1858-CTO.
