T410 9cell Battery problem

#1 Post by Greisen » Sun Nov 21, 2010 5:33 pm

Hi this morning when i started my T410, a pop-up told me, that my battery was charged for maximum lifespan or something like that. But my problem I, that I since I started my computer this morning have a worse battery then yesterday.
My T410 I about 10 days old. Yesterday I had a design capacity of about 94 wh on my battery, but now it Is only 84 wh.
The funniest thing is, that my battery this morning was charged to 94 wh, but the full charge capacity and design capacity said that it was only possible for my battery to get a max charge of 94 wh.

Everywhere I look the design capacity of the 9 cell battery should be 94 wh on my T410, and so it was yesterday.
I only have 3 cycles on my battery, and the latest firmware update for the battery. The FRU number is: 42T4912…

I did at battery gouge reset this night… No result

The battery has never been discharged to zero...

Pleas help me. My battery got 10 percent worse since yesterday…. :(

Giday Greisen;
Sounds like you need to call Lenovo Tech Support and ask for a BATTERY Exchange (swap) under warranty. I have had my T410s (9 cell) do nearly same thing - after 3 cycles it was down to 12% and after 5 cycles it was down 22% of "rated" ...(( be aware that Tech Support will ask you to update the latest Battery firware - which you did already!))I got a new Battery , its more 'normal' cycle ... Hope you have better luck wth next one

Cheers

If you don't confuse "design capacity" and "remaining capacity"/"full charge capacity", then it is likely you've just forgot something and it was 84wh since the beginning.
"Design capacity" is, well, design capacity, it won't change over time, and even completely dead battery will have the same design capacity as brand new one. It is just manufacture-written data, like "SerialNumber" or "Manufacture date" etc; they could write there 840wh or 8.4wh and it would mean nothing. What really matters is "Full charge capacity" - that is, what charge will the battery accept in its current condition.

I don’t confuse it. I know that design capacity can´t change, or shouldn’t.

And i completely agree. The design capacity shouldn’t be able to change over time. But it is.

I just called Lenovo i Denmark, ant the woman i talked to, was very confused, and she had never heard about a problem like that.

But the 9cell battery for the T410 is born with a capacity of 94wh, and mine was. But now after a firmware update, that was downloaded trough the ThinkVantage tool, my design capacity of my battery is changed to 84wh...

But now she had to contact their back office, in Scotland, for further information. Then she would call me, and inform me about what to do :?

I know it is hardly probable, but maybe there is a bug in a firmware?
Try to do "Battery Maintenance", what "Full charge capacity" and "Remaining capacity" will it display?

3.20.
Switch to "Advanced" mode, then you will find "Battery Maintenance" button on the "Battery" tab.

Ok, mine is 3.25… But i only have an option to reset the gouge, and to configure the percentage, that it shout charge from. And that’s under battery maintenance.

But now I am just waiting for Lenovo to call, and tell me if they can fix it, otherwise they will have to send me another battery…

Yes, you should do that "battery gauge reset".

I guess they won't go deep inside this problem, and will just ask you to send your battery to manufacturer, and then they will send you another battery, and this will give about 2 weeks turnaround time, and if it is really just bug in the power manager, nothing will change.
I recommend you to do that "battery gauge reset" and then check the actual battery capacity ("Remaining capacity" and "Full charge capacity", not the "Design capacity").

Now they send me a new battery. They didn’t know the problem.

And i could just send the old back to "IBM" ;) An old confirmation mail i think...

ps.

I did the reset of the battery, and the battery charges until 94wh, and then discharges. But then it charges again, and only charges to 84...

I don't know about Denmark, but in Russia, Lenovo ThinkPads are serviced in IBM services, just like IBM ThinkPads were in the past. And IdeaPads support is going through completely different channels.

Same in Israel.

Interestingly, here IBM services Thinkpads, and Lenovo Value systems, however just like in Russia - Ideapad is serviced by another service provider, who also services Thinkpads.
