IBM R32

#1 Post by dbc2065 » Tue Nov 23, 2010 10:37 pm

Hi

new to thinkpad.com after searching also google some i can't seem to find the answer. What my question is R32 is there any kind of upgrade option for it meaning motherboard direct fit? If not i notice many different motherboard part numbers for replacement which part number would be best replacement. I rather upgrade board all together of course.

Thanks for your time

David

Welcome to the forum!

There's really not much of an upgrade one can do with a R32, I'm sorry to say. You'll be limited to P4M CPUs and a fairly awkward choice of wireless cards.

If the machine is on its way out, give it a proper burial and move on.

Good luck.

Hey I have a couple R32's lying around myself, I upgraded one of them to have 1.5GBs of ram and put in a 160GB 5200rpm. The other one is dead, I try to turn it on and the power and fans come on but the screen stays black.... I wonder if I hook it up to external monitor (new idea!!!).......

Anyhow the R32 is crazy slow, but I think really bottle-necked by the HDD, I would think a cheap IDE ssd if I could find one would be the next upgrade for it, just enough to get debian/ubuntu and the restricted extras for it.....

My other upgrades USB2.0, wireless, extra NIC are via the PCMCIA, also got an extra hard disk caddy and battery that can swap out with the dvd player....

Thats my story, this laptop is ok using it for my 4 year old to play with paint and abiword on it, and also using it as an extra network backup for my documents.
