Just wanted to say to all the members on this forum who have given me advice on my Thinkpad T60p, a large thank you.
My aging Toshiba Satellite A30 started to sound like a concord everytime it booted up. The spin of the fans scaled the amount of decibles
accepted in a laptop and was frequently shutting down in mid artwork which was very annoying. My relationship with the laptop was to stop
working when the fans went into rotation madness and to let it cool down, before I started drawing again. This had to stop and along with it weighing
more like a desktop and hard to dissamble, I decided it was time for a new laptop. I was trying to find something in a 4:3 format because I really
needed the height for my work, but the screen was most important as there was nothing worst than drawing with a selected colour palette, slightly moving your head and realising that the colours you chose were six shades darker because you wasn't looking at the screen in the "correct lcd sweet spot".
Having to go back and change the colours is not fun.
The Toshiba replacement - T60p is a great machine. It's quiet, has less heating problems (the Toshiba Satellite was known for getting hot) and it's lighter -
though it will be even more lighter when I buy a 6 cell battery as the laptop is mostly plugged into the wall.
I'm not going to make any performance comparisons to the Toshiba as that just wouldn't be fair with it being a far older laptop sporting a Pentium 4, 64MB graphics card, 512MB of Ram and a 40GB HDD; it has done me very well through the six years that I've had it. Though the HDD has died, I will search through google to find a way to disassemble it and clean it for internet use only.
When I found this site, it was through searching for good lcd screens. This forum has helped and enabled me to pick a laptop that is very configurable to my needs, has helped me in upgrading the cpu, wwan installation, bios fixes, knowledge on what makes a good keyboard etc, with a whole host of other things. I've disassembled, swapped, changed, upgraded, ripped, pulled and done a very scary bios update which I probably would of done through windows if the information wasn't available here, which could of left me with an expensive paper weight.
The T60p has being running fine for a year now and apart from a dodgy HDD, which has now been replaced be the Momentus and at some point I will have to replace the palmrest as it's warped and doesn't sit properly, it's been a rather good purchase.
Thanks.
