Question: Possible to upgrade my x61s with a tocuhscreen?

#1 Post by GandalfGraw » Tue Dec 07, 2010 4:28 pm

Hi,
I'm hungry for a project, and I'm thinking of pimping my x61s. Would it work to exchange the lcd-sceen with one from the x61t? Would it be at all possible for me to make it fit with the cables and the motherboard?

That is to say, it's not a drop-in replacement. The tablet screens are thicker owing to the digitizer, and unless I'm mistaken you don't have the right headers for the touch screen.

That said, given enough time and patience anything is possible.
X61 Tablet - 1.6GHz C2D, SXGA+, 1GB RAM, 100GB HD, Vista Business.

i have other laptops but i'll be honest i never use 'em

All you would need to replace is the lid, panel, screen bezel, and cable for the top. The cable for the tablet has more leads and splits into a "y". The tablet cable needs a different hinge to allow the cable. You could keep the bluetooth card if you have one, but that is all. As far as the lower half, you would need a different base, to allow for the different hinge. You would also need to change the battery. You might be able to use the motherboard, as long as you didn't connect the pen sensor. Also, I thing the LCD connector doesn't have the leads for the digitizer, so the touch and pen things wouldn't work. You would need to change the palmrest and keyboard bezel, because of the different hinge. Also, your ultrabase wouldn't work. So yes, you can reuse your hard disk (you would need a different OS). Your A/C adaptor would also work. Also, your wireless card and modem would be OK.
