Windows XPSP2 Firewall status at a glance?

Hi folks-

Pre-SP2, in the Network Connections the LAN or Wireless would show a status such as "Connected, Firewalled."

Now in SP2, the "Firewalled" part of the status doesn't seem to come up, at least for me. I can go in to the properties of the connection and see the status, but that takes a few seconds and a bit of effort.

Is there a way to turn on the status at a glance for the Firewall? I change the status periodically because I have an application that requires it to be off to work properly; I like to enable it right away after that but sometimes I forget. So, an at-a-glance view of on or off would be helpful.

Why not just add the program to the exceptions list in Windows Firewall?

Apparently it doesn't work.

It's an ancient 16 bit program (surprised it runs at all) and something about the way it moves data reportedly causes a conflict of some sort. I haven't experimented, just relying on data from others at this point.

Now here's the weird part: SUDDENLY I am seeing "Firewalled" in the status. I swear it wasn't there before.

Oh well.
