After reading about these I am tempted to try one.
What all do I require to use a sata drive via this slot?.Will it be faster than a
high speed (15/8 read ,write) Usb?
Does the hd disk slide into the dvd slot?.
Also, how much would a dvd writer cost?.

Re: sata hd instead of slim line cd/dvd ---/dvd writer
Hello
The parts you need will be the HDD caddy that you put your SATA HDD in (I assume you wish to use a SSD). The caddy with the drive inside can then be installed in the Ultrabay slot instead of your current optical drive. The caddy you need will be this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/IBM-Thinkpad-T40-Ul ... 3a5dbfbe5a
I have not tried this myself, but judging from the other threads about this, people are very satisfied with the speed increase they get buy using a SATA SSD in the Ultrabay. Be aware of the 30 sec boot delay if you choose to remove the old HDD from your primary bay.
I didn't quite get the next question; are you looking for an external DVD writer, to use instead of the one you have in the Ultrabay today? If you already have one, you can still use it over USB, by purchasing this little device: http://cgi.ebay.com/External-USB-Adapte ... 4cee03f0f7
If you don't have a DVD writer, you can use one from a T60. That goes for the HDD caddy as well. Just be aware that these have a flat lid, so they won't line up 100% with your T4x body. The DVD R/Ws I found on eBay are in the range $50-60.
