X301 and MBR

#1 Post by camo200 » Fri Dec 10, 2010 10:27 pm

I am running WinXP-SP3 on a X301. For the first year it was working fine with AHCI mode activated in the BIOS and a SSD SATA 64Gb. However, every now and then I lose the MBR and I have to repair it with XP installation disk. If I deactivate AHCI and use COMPATIBILITY mode, XP works fine but slower. I have tried to update the SSD firmware and the SATA driver for XP but they seem to be updated. I suspect some XP update changed something, because the laptop was working like a charm until now. Any ideas? Anybody experienced this problem before?

It sounds to me like your SSD is going south. Try a conventional drive or another SSD as a test in AHCI mode as a test.

Things to check:

1) The BIOS should offer you a way to test the disk. Do it.

2) Check your SMART status. If your SSD is on its way out, it may know it.

The drive passed the test. What is that thing called SMART? I don't see anything in the BIOS

Yes, it is an Intel. I run the SMART test and everything is OK. I ended up installing Linux and running XP in a virtual machine. It must be something wrong with Windows' MBR, I suspect.
