Case materials
There was a review from a purchaser posted at:
http://reviews-zdnet.com.com/IBM_ThinkP ... ml?tag=tab
in which the reviewer said:
"First, the material that covers the LCD is made of rubber-like covered magnesium composite. This cover scratches easily as well as dents easily on the edges just by picking up the laptop out of your case. I wish they had used a cheaper harder plastic cover or used the same titanium composite they used for the bottom. Second, a flimsy plastic cover covers the pc card slot."
Can anyone who has received a T42 comment on the accuracy or inaccuracy of this?
Thanks,
Andrew

Hmm, interesting...my 8 month old T41 doesn't have a scratch. This reviewer must have some kind of interesting case, heh. Mine goes in my backpack's notebook sleeve almost every day, and sometimes I even throw it onto my bed. I really prefer the rubbery top to plastic (or Apple's aluminum, which is the one that REALLY gets scratched and dented easily).
4 year old 600X with the "rubberized" cover material and no scratches, no dents and it has travelled the world many times over.
1+year old T40p with the "rubberized" cover and no scratches, no dents and it has travelled the continental US many times over.
Worried about scratching or denting my laptop?? Not hardly.
(BTW, the 15" T42 is made of the same materials as the other T series. That was one of the major changes from bringing the 15" from the R series into the T series "fold")

I've had my T40 for 14 months.
Cover material: I just checked and there don't appear to be any scratches on the surface. The corners are showing some wear though.
PC Card Slot: I find that it is flimsy, and I actually prefer slot fillers (I used a Dell Latitude CPi for 3 years and the fillers worked very well). The door has fallen out on me twice and I have had to re-install it. For some reason, the spring that controls the door would fall out of place, so I ended up taping part of it to the door! The door hasn't fallen out since

Homebuilt PC: AMD Athlon XP (Barton) @ 1.47 GHz; nForce2 Ultra; 1GB RAM; 80GB HDD @ 7200RPM; ATI Radeon 9600; Integrated everything else!

I have had my T40 for 11 months now and I can't tell any difference in the cover from the day I got it.
It is very strange the way fingerprints adhere to it.
But cleaning it every now and then removes them from sight.
But with that said if your cover is just really bad you can always order a new one through the parts dept. I think on the T40 it's like $25.00.
