600x dvd boot up?

I have a 600x with NO cd-rom, only a DVD player. However, I got a floppy drive (with caddy) from someone. I cannot make a bootable floppy with ROM support. I want to put XP on this thing. I need all necessary files. I downloaded something from MS, 6 disk set, got to the 3rd disk and crapped out, something about a file being corrupted. Tried that twice. If anyone has any ideas or just that can put them in english to me, how bout it. Thanks in advance.

What's the make and model number of the DVD drive?

If it's one of the 2X POS that came with the early 600s and 600Es, get a replacement CD/DVD off eBay for under $20 and quit fighting with it.

the dvd appears to be a toshiba, model #sd-c2302.

got any ideas? I have a drive but it is a USB wont work right?

That's a 6X DVD 24X CD-ROM, not a DVD only.

Have you set the CD as the first device in the BOOT order?

By default you should set your BOOT order to CD, FDD, HD1.

That drive is definitely able to BOOT the 600X, just throw the XP CD in it and BOOT the machine.

I tried that before, it says, "invalid system disk, replace the disk, and then press any key". I have done this before. Heres the deal, I got this at a sale, it had 95 on it. I formatted the drive. Now I cant do anything to get it going again. I made a boot disk and can see the H/D but I cant get anything to load on it. I dont get it. This is an easy operation that is gettng out of control.

You apparently don't have the optical drive set as the first BOOT device!

Press and hold the F1 key while turning on the unit. Release after the MEMCOUNT completes and you hear the POST beep.

Fly the Birdie to Startup and left click. Click on Power-On then click Reset. Then set your BOOT order to CDROM, FDD and HDD1. Then OK your way back to the initial menu and click on Restart.

The unit will BOOT from the CD and install XP.

James, I am not doubting that you know what you are talking about and I am here because I need help. This is a simple procedure, I have changed it many times, and with multiple combinations of the drive settings. I am getting NO boot from the CD with ANY combination of boot options.

I know how to change drives and setups, I am on this forum for information that maybe someone else had this problem before. I appreciate your help James, I really do. I am not new to this.

After having the cd in the drive and the drives set to cd,flopp,hd1, there is NO setup screen, simply put "invalid system disk". The drive runs I hear the disk spinning up but I get no reply from it. I think I need a driver for the CD drive. I dont have a 98 startup disk, I can get it to start with a dos floppy. And I can see the "C" drive, just cant get anything to happen.

I apologize if my response appears condescending at first read, but not having corresponded with many of the posters before we read their requests here in the Forums we all tend to default to basics.

At this point I would have to agree with Edward that you have a non-functioning optical drive. Where are you located? Perhaps one of us could lend you one in order to get the unit up and running.

I think the problem could be that the bios setup cannot detect your cdrom drive properly. To verify this, you can go the bios setup, then go into the startup menu, then the power on menu and check if you see a + sign before the cdrom. If the + sign is not there, it means that your cdrom drive is not detected.

I have the same problem after I upgraded the the original cdrom drive of my 390E to a dvdrom drive. The dvdrom drive is not bootable anymore and I realised that this could be because the the bios setup cannot detect the drive. However, the drive is detected and works properly in windows. Another interesting thing is that when I use the HWINFO32 utility to check on the dvdrom drive, I find that the dvdrom drive is fixed as a secondary slave drive. This could be another reason why the drive is not bootable.
