Testing the DVD/CDR drive outside the laptop?

#1 Post by Likvid » Mon Dec 13, 2010 11:16 am

I have a T400 which the DVD/CD-R drive has stopped working, i can not open it when pressing the button for eject, no lamp is blinking either, however the system is recognizing the unit but it doesn't seem to have any power.

Is there anyway to test the DVD/CD-R unit with another computer? i checked the connectors at the back of the unit and it seems to have some sort of SATA but of a mini connector model.

The unit got FRU 42T2551

I have no other Thinkpad to test it with so i would like to try it on my PC to sort out if the unit is at fault or something on the system board is fault.

Hi,

There is a small switch underneath the drive bay, move it to the right, a lever will come out, pull it to take out the drive and then reinstall by sliding the drive back. If this doesn't solve the issue, then try buying or borrowing SATA-to-USB adapter for laptop's optical drive, they go fairly cheap on eBay, connect the drive to the adapter and test it on any PC.

Hope this helps.
