Panic!

#1 Post by spoon » Thu Mar 17, 2005 2:10 am

Hi everyone,
after 9 months of flawless use of my T42 2378fvu, I was working an hour ago normally (just browsing in internet, low CPU and HD charge), and the holes of ventilation were cleared. All of a sudden the laptop switched off, like if it run out of electric power. I began to review the laptop, took out the battery... and I didn't find anything strange. 15 minutes later I tried to turn on the laptop again and it's been working perfectly until now.
The laptop is still under warranty, shoud I send the laptop to IBM to check it out?, thats annoying because I need it to work, but it's necessary I'll do it.
Thanks in advance.

Here's what I would do...... call IBM and open a case. They will send you a box for repair. However, I would NOT actually send it in unless it happens again (could have been a fluke). They will keep the case open for about 10 days. If it happens again, you save a day by having the box. If not, they will close the case, and that will be the end of it.

Spoon-

The cables that are part of the AC adaptor sometimes short out, usually right at where the "cable" meets the "plug" that plugs into the computer. A short here causes an instant power-off. I've had three adaptors do this to me over the years. First one took me literally two months to track down as the problem got more severe. Eventually I found out that it happened only when plugged in and only when the computer moved, even a little. Voila. Bad cable.

guys, thanks so much for your advices. I feel more calm now. I'll give a call to IBM to make sure what's going on, and most likely I'll extend the warranty for an additional year to have peace of mind.
Thanks!

This happened to me! Acutally I was in a bind and was forced to use a severed power supply for about a month while a new one was on the way. The wire got severed, but I taped it together... It worked ok, I just couldn't move it or the power would cut off. Anyway, one day it shorted out and the thinkpad immediatly shut off, I guess its a safety feature, but at the time it freaked me out a little.

Yeah, safety feature. That must be it! :P

I think the short external to the system isn't trapped internally, so suddenly the system gets zero power. At least the battery doesn't explode!
