Bad T30 memory slot - tried to fix...

#1 Post by rwarlick » Sun Dec 19, 2010 12:56 pm

Just bought a new keyboard and two 512mb pc2700 sticks to upgrade this baby and realized there is a bad RAM slot. Thanks to all those forum pioneers before me who gave me hope I could fix this.

I did manage to get BIOS recognition of the bad slot by pressing on the seated RAM gently up into the motherboard with a couple of fingers. Once pressure was relieved, I'm back to one.

Is this memory slot issue especially common with the T30?

You should have seen me - I had a small magnifying lens taped to my glasses, a flashlight balanced on an orange, as I guided the weller iron over the pins.

I was looking to load windows 7 on this machine

Any recommendations for an "older" model Thinkpad that can carry at least 1GB ram to run windows 7?

lol

Must have been a sight to see!

Try typing in "T30 2gb RAM" into the forums search engine. That might get you something. I'm not sure if a T30 will do one 2gb stick. I actually had a T30 last year as my first Thinkpad but my TP had both it's slots working. Good luck :)

As mentioned above, plenty posts about the notorious T30 RAM slot, and how to fix it.
The T30 can take 2x 1GB RAM (PC2100 or PC2700).
I wouldn't load W7 onto it, XP-Pro will be fine with 512MB, better with 1GB, best with 2GB.
