Bezel Crack Repair advice or tips

#1 Post by blink » Mon Dec 20, 2010 11:53 pm

Hi, I have just purchased an X60s for what seemed like a decent price off ebay (There seems to be a lot around at the moment going for reasonable prices. It seems fine & in nice condition apart from the hot palm rest & a crack in the bezel.
Im not really good with a screwdriver or stripping down laptops so dont want to have to replace it. Is a bit of superglue a decent option as a semi repair, as i could maybe manage that?
edit: Its near the power socket, Ive just signed up to flickr hopefully this pic link should work?

That's the upper bezel if I'm not mistaken. I don't know if superglue will fix it.

I wasn't either, but I can assure you that it's quite easy to change if you follow the HMM. You can even buy an X61 bezel for better cooling. It's what I did with mine and I'm very happy!

you can purchase one of these keyboard bezel on ebay.

Superglue alone won't fix your issues (and probably not the best glue to use in this case). You would need some plastic backing tapes (i.e. velcro plastic backing tape) and stick them in front and back of the where the crack is located, so that you can hold the crack in position. Then cover these cracks using high quality epoxy glues. Have a look at the diagram that i drawn up (pretty lousy but to the point).

I won't recommend superglue been used by itself, because there is not enough surface area on the crack surface for superglue to hold the two pieces in place, it would also 'melt' the surfaces and surrounding area, which makes fitting the pieces together even harder.

So the plastic backing tapes and epoxy glue are the best method for a DIY repair, otherwise spend the money and get a second hand replacement. However a note of caution, the X60/s machines bezel have an infrared windows, while the X61/s bezels don't have such windows (at least i haven't seen one).

That's correct, I forgot to mention that. If the OP doesn't need infrared my personal advice would be to go for the X61 bezel for better cooling. Otherwise you will have to stick to the standard X60 one.

My friend's X60s had something like this. I just glued it to structure below it. Not like most people will ever need to take that apart anyway.

Super glue worked for my X60s cracked in the same place...also "Plastic Surgery Glue" works. Not sure if you can get it in England.
