My X200T Won't Turn On Anymore. Help!

#1 Post by epu » Thu Dec 23, 2010 6:17 pm

Happened out of nowhere today. It either won't turn on at all, or if it does, it commands me to press F1 for the date and time settings, then it just shuts off. Hard Drive is fine. Everything else I can think of works great. What could be the problem? I have brand new 4 and 8 Cell batteries too. I'm clueless and want my baby to work!

I don't know what gives, but I was able to make it start up (after setting the TIME in the Bios - What the hell?). I do find that if I apply pressure to the palm rest, the machine shuts off! Weird stuff! It's driving me mad!

Could it be that the CMOS battery is loose and/or making only intermittent contact?

I don't know. Could this easily be checked by opening the unit? Does this happen often? Really weird. I've owned several Lenovos and this never happened. I will check and report back.

I don't know what the motherboard looks like but it might be that a surface mount chip has partially peeled off and the solder contacts need reflowing.

I would definitiely take the laptop apart and take a look at what is around where you think might be the problem area. The thinkpads are all made to be taken apart easily.

That is a pretty common problem with other devices..I've never heard of it on a thinkpad but anything is possible.

if there's any loose chip, you won't be able to see it. but, before you start taking your thinkpad apart, are you still in warranty? if yes, if definetely suggest you send your tablet to lenovo. otherwise, I'd go for the loose BIOS battery. a battery can get loose way more easily than a motherboard chip, and lenovo has taking a lot of precautions to prevent the chips from getting loose.

My machine is one complete year out of warranty, so I will have to open up the unit. This definitely is a motherboard issue, as if I do get passed the Bios screen (i.e. Save/Exit) and it DOES BOOT, then everything is normal. Hard Drive isn't damanged, Win7 isn't damaged, and this is not an overheating problem. I've researched the net and quite a few people say that after a while they've had motherboard issues.

If it is this, I might purchase a new X200T and swap hard drives. I love this laptop and need it up and running :( My favorite Lenovo ever.

Its not about looking to see if there is a loose chip. It is about seeing if there id a chip there, or what is there. You say applying pressure to the palmrest will shut it off...so if it was me, I would take it apart, take notice of what was on the motherboard in the suspected location, and get it to boot. Then, Id try to shut it off by pushing on the suspect components.

You can run a computer without a cmos battery. It just wouldn't retain the date and time when you shut it off. If the battery were to go dead while running windows, it wouldn't shut off.

Good luck.

There should be some nice tutorial vidoes on youtube on taking the x2005 apart.

What I don't get is, when the battery is in, it won't turn on. When I have the battery off and have it plugged in through the AC adaptor, the screen turns on and shuts off immediately. It won't start or boot!

indeed sounds like a motherboard problem, a power related issue I suspect. that would also explain why the bios keeps losing time, the backup battery power is also regulated by the power system. the only easy thing you could try is remove the backup battery and try if it boots in any way (with/without battery, with/without adapter). if your're really desparate, try removing and unplugging everything from the motherboard, and then replug processor and 1 memory module. nothing else, not even the screen! connect an external screen, and see if it boots (oh wait, you need a powerbutton for that. OK, you can also connect the keyboard). if you see some bios stuff (it will probably murmle some things about time, and no drive found), then you can go to the next step: connect the backup battery and the HDD. if it starts normally, you will be happy. but there isn't much chance it will. but if it does, keep reconecting everything until you find something that prevents the laptop from booting. but I don't really think this is going to help, it's probably ready for the trash can

Yeah thanks. I tried doing that and this morning, I got the system to boot and stay up for about an hour w/no problems. Then it gave way again w/the screen not even powering up. [censored]. This is $2500 down the drain. But I need to replace. About to drop another $1000 on eBay. Oh man!

Very sorry to hear of your bad luck. However, you don't have to spend $1000 to get another X200T-Lenovo has been selling brand new x200T's thru their outlet store for $649. They ran out a couple of days ago, and then this morning there were 36 back in stock-but those sold out too just a while ago. Keep checking the Lenovo outlet as I am sure there will be more available soon.

Eric. Can you post a link? I am looking to get a Multitouch just like the one I have now. Do you know if they have Windows 7? I will do a google search.

The last ones that sold for $649 were not Multitouch-they just had the pen enabled outdoor bright screen. Yes, they were Windows 7 32bit. Almost two weeks ago they did have a Multitouch verision for around $670-680 but they sold out very quickly.

How do you know if they're Multitouch? Will it say it on the site? I see NO specs.
