760el standby
760el standby
Hello,
I've got a TP 760el here without an operation system (/s formatted hard drive with some utils on it) and as soon as it has finished booting (i'm at the command prompt) it goes into standby mode (or something else :s).
The hard drive and all just stop, no video anymore. The second LED (first green one) is burning. When I try to switch the notebook back on using the on/off switch, all I get are 2 beeps from the system speakers...
Does anyone know why the notebook does this? I can be in the BIOS/POST for as long as I want and it won't shut down. So anything Pre-OS works, but as soon as the command prompt appears, the system goes into some sort of standby mode.
Thanks a lot!

i had a simlar problem with a 760 and never could figure it out,i would get to the command prompt and try to format the hd and no matter what hard drive i used i couldnt get past the command prompt.my best guess was a motherboard problem.if you figure it out let me know it will make good reference if i have this problem with my other 760.i parted out the one i had problems with
Sounds like the classic broken lid switch. If your machine thinks the lid is closed, it will suspend.
Try hooking up an external keyboard and monitor. Turn it on with the lid closed and you should be good to go. If that works, it's the switch.

Little detail I forgot to mention: The laptop is totally disassembled
. The screen-switch is in normal condition all the time. But why doesn't the notebook go into standby as soon as it boots, so when it's still in the POST?
I have tried to hold the switch down when the notebook boots, but it seems that it goes into standby even faster. But it could be that I did not hold it down right, so I have to test that again.

I found the solution to my problem:
It was this little switch: http://home.scarlet.be/~ga002655/Lapmod ... G_3744.jpg.
I think it is used to tell when the notebook is open (not just when the monitor is up, also when the keyboard is up so you can look at the insides of the notebook). So if I keep this button pressed, the notebook works just fine
!

OK...so where is that button???
That sounds so much like the problem I have been having with my 760ED. But I sure can't tell from the pic your link leads to where the darn switch that you are talking about is located. Any more info you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Go to the very left of the status lcd on the keyboard, go about one inch to the left then one inch up, you should see the tiny standby switch. If the switch is the problem, you can order a new LCD cable, but replacing the cable requires taking apart the computer and the LCD.

Thanks Alpha...
So, I can push or whatever with the switch, and if that's the problem, and I can get a boot out of it, then all I have to do is replace that switch??? Sounds simple...

Thanks.

These problems could also occur on a 760 due to the keyboard switch. Right below your main battery there's a little peg. It pushes up on a button that is in the keyboard; this is how the 760 knows if the keyboard is open or closed. With your machine disassembled, if you didn't close that switch somehow, it'd go to sleep.
For everyone else, that peg can break and still look sorta' ok, but no longer be long enough to properly depress the switch in the keyboard. Use a car key or something to push the button in, and see if the machine stays awake.

Yes, indeed. This is the switch I was talking about and the one that is showing on the picture.SeanM wrote:These problems could also occur on a 760 due to the keyboard switch. The switch that determines if the notebook's screen is lifted up was NOT the problem. It was the keyboard switch...
You can check out some more pictures of where to locate the switch on the link I posted earlier.
TiTan...more info on the pic, please!
Could you sort of orient those of us who aren't familiar with the innards of our thinkpads regarding what exactly we are looking at in the pic in Post 6? What parts are those? Where are they located in the assembled computer? Thanks!
When you face the notebook, the part with the switch on it is right in front of you.
It is between the keyboard and yourself, you have to open to keyboardlid to access it.
I hope this was kinda clear, if not please say so and i will try to take a picture of where to find it.
Edit:
Turns out I already have a picture like that:
