If the backlight doesn't turn on at the BIOS POST (ThinkPad logo), then it could be one of three things:
1) The backlight on the panel is actually dead, or somewhere on the panel something went.
2) The LCD cable is damaged.
3) The motherboard is damaged.
My T400 suffered the same symptoms after I failed at disassembling the lid assembly.
Ended up replacing the LCD panel and cable to no effect and the motherboard is being fixed at the moment.
If you're under warranty, just call them up and see what they can do.
