GPU freezing solved by turning off pagefile?

#1 Post by Sweater Fish Deluxe » Thu Dec 30, 2010 7:13 pm

I've had two T4x laptops die on me with this bad GPU freezing problem now. First, a T41 a few years ago and now the T42 that I bought as a replacement.

I really can't afford to replace my laptop right now, so I've been trying to make do with a stack of nickles underneath the keyboard and not trying not to move it very much. It's pretty iffy, though, obviously, and I started to notice that the freezing and hardresets were corrupting files on my harddrive, so first I turned of write-caching and then a couple days later I thought to also turn of the pagefile.

Ever since turning off the pagefile, the system doesn't freeze any more. The GPU is still loose and so the screen blacks out, but if I press the palmrest it comes back on. The system actually seems to be frozen while the screen is off, but when it comes back on there's no sign of any problems. I suppose it's still annoying, but compared to how it was before...man, I can live with this.

It's only been "fixed" like this for about a week, so maybe too soon to say if it's really gonna work in the long run. But for people who know more about computers, does this seem like a legit explanation or am I just tripping?

Hard to say. If you can recreate the problem by turning the pagefile back on, you're probably correct. Otoh, you may have had a mildly corrupted pagefile, in which case the problem could be sporatic.

Btw, I like to place a full size postit pad under the front edge of my tpads to provide for air flow. Just my $.02 worth, or, in this case, maybe $.05 :P
