Attack of the HP nc6200 series!

#1 Post by K. Eng » Thu Mar 17, 2005 8:27 pm

The HP website for the United States didn't have much in the way of a presentation for the new nc6200 series (T43 competitor), but the HP Australia site had a very interesting flash demo:

http://h71016.www7.hp.com/html/interact ... model.html

The similarity in design to the T4x is striking, although the nc6200 still lacks a ThinkLight device and scroll key for the TrackPoint. However, it is functionally similar and maybe even superior in some respects (like having 3x USB ports, and SD card reader). There's also something about LCD panel protection system, but no mention of a HDD airbag like the ThinkPad!

There is metion of something called "HP Mobile Data Protection" but nothign about what it actually is.

Suggests something similar to the T42's airbag.

The HP Mobile Data
Protection System is designed to help prevent such failures. To mitigate the risk of data loss, the hard drive
goes into standby mode when the notebook’s lid is closed, ensuring that the heads are parked while the user
is traveling or moving from meeting to meeting. In addition, the hard-drive mounting design reduces the
transmission of shock to the hard drive.
IT IS a clone of the IBM Active protection system!

the IBM active protection system parks the HDD heads when the thinkpad moves in a sudden way..
i.e. an accelerometer(sp?) tells the APS that there is a sudden movement that is unanticipated and to park the heads..
unanticipated = a sudden drop or a movement that is sharply different from the immediately preceeding string of small vibrations..

the h/p system parks the heads when the lid is closed..
and that appears to be IT..!

On second reading, you are right, Bill. The HP system doesn't appear to be anything other than a shock mounted disk (sort of like Panasonic Toughbook).

IBM still #1! :D

I like it but it is a direct copy of the t series of course, especially with the quick access buttons for volume and wifi etc. Would like to see it in real life as i deffinately think it has promise. I like the idea of LCD protection and long lasting keys on the keyboard - good ideas!

James -

p.s. IBM are still top dog! :D
T42 - 1.6ghz, 1gb Ram (upgrade), 40gb hd, 32mb ATI Radeon mobility 7500.

It looks like a really nice laptop, I agree that it looks like a copy of a T series laptop but that's probably because it's got the dual pointing devices and it's black, that's about where the similarities stop IMO.
I think it should be quite popular for corporate customers and the inclusion of a serial port might make these popular laptops for people that need to work with networks and other hardware like that (although it doesn't seem to have a parallel port, which I wouldn't miss).

I really like the ambient light sensor for the LCD, and if it had an over-ride it would be perfect :) The smart card reader and SD card reader also look very handy.

Nice to see that IBM are going to have some actual competition in the corporate market now, since only IBM and dell have really been trying for that in recent years (HP/compaq have seemed like a real mess in recent years).

well such imitation was supposed to happen. it is just a matter of time. But remember that IBM is an innovator and come up with new ideas and they are first ones to implement it on a product.

I am sure IBM will come up with something new that will separate itself from others. Well t least I hope Lenovo will do that.

The battery life sucks. The reviews didn't say what the battery capacities are, but it still fell behind the Dell and IBM models. I've seen a couple reviews of preproduction models that said the same thing: 2.5-3 hours work time per charge. My T40 gets 2.5 hours on a battery that's 33% degraded. :?

Maybe firmware or power management software updates will improve the battery life.

I currently use a new HP nc6000 at work. The battery lasted yesterday 6h25min. Excellent!
Like the T40p with the new large battery.

The Sonomas suck, slightly faster but half the battery life (!!).

I think your nc6000 is probably using the 8-cell battery instead of the 6-cell if you are getting 6.5 hours on a new unit.
