X61s missing 2nd fan connector

#1 Post by theplayfuleyes » Fri Dec 31, 2010 1:29 am

My x61s palmrest gets pretty hot and I noticed that it's missing the 2nd fan connector upon inspecting the motherboard. Is there a way install the connector myself or call in warranty to have it replace the motherboard (warranty ends in 1/13/2011). What do you experts think I should do? Thanks?

I have never heard of this connector. Call service...the call is free. Better hurry. :)

No, I'm missing the connector for the 2nd fan located beneath the palm rest. It's Lenovo's way to deal with the dreaded heated palm rest issue in the earlier build of x61/s models

As far as I know the 2nd fan connector was standard equipment on X61s machines originally ordered with the factory WWAN feature, and no I do not recall ever having seen anyone solder a new one in place. As far as heat being a warranty issue, you'd have to take that up with Lenovo. If you posted your machines temps here we can certainly comment on them. Try tpfancontrol in BIOS mode.

The motherboard circuitry is different - not just the connector. If you have a board that has the connector and you do not have a fan plugged in, you get a fan error. If you want the 2nd fan, you need a different motherboard
