2 Bluetooth Icons after IBM BT SW Update; one is red, help!

#1 Post by kjarrett » Fri Mar 18, 2005 3:47 pm

Just updated several drivers via the new Thinkpad update service. My bluetooth is working (optical mouse), but, I have two BT icons in the tray, one is blue/white, one is red/blue. The blue/white one seems to allow me to turn the icon off, but it won't go away. The red/blue one says "Bluetooth on T42p" (the latter is my machine name) and it also says "no devices found."

Under Device Manager, I have two BT radios, IBM integrated BT III and Microsoft BT enumerator. Are both required?

I can't tell if BT II is stll listed in add/remove programs, no sign of BT III. Should I remove BT II?

Thanks, kj

Hi!

You seem to have both, the bluetooth stack from Windows that was introduced with Service Pack 2 and the bluetooth stack from Widcomm (the blue/red one).

Normally if you have the Widcomm stack the Windows stack should be disabled. Either deinstall the Widcomm stack (to keep the Windows stack) or reinstall it (if you prefer the Widcomm stack).

Thanks bit it didn't work - disabling the Microsoft enumerator did nothing, disabling the IBM stopped the mouse from responding. What else can I try? -kj-

Ok, has anyone updated their IBM Bluetooth drivers successfully? What did you do?

Everything is working but I have two icons in my tray. One appears to belong to Windows. That works fine, I can interrogate it, view info, etc., even turn the icon off.

The other one is red/blue, indicating a problem, and says "bluetooth device not found" when I right click it. This appears to be the IBM software.

In Control Panel, the bluetooth devices applet works great (it brings up the same dialog as the one in the tray.) Bluetooth Configuration gives me an error (no devices found).

IBM support is clueless, what should I expect for 7am on a weekend.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled several times. No change.

I've uninstalled devices in Device Manager, each time, the mouse is disabled. Both appear required.

Something is not right. Can anyone help? This is getting a little frustrating. I have a crapload of work to do today but this red icon staring at me is causing a serious anger problem! LOL

Thanks, kj

Bluetooth Fix

#5 Post by BobsThinkPad » Sun Mar 20, 2005 1:36 am

I had the same problem after using the new IBM Software Installer on my T42. The solution was to use the IBM Software Installer to uninstall the newly installed IBM Integrated Bluetooth Software. After a reboot everything was back to normal with only one Bluetooth icon in the tray.

While IBM indicates this software is "Required", apparently it isn't. Hope this helps your problem...Bob

KJ,

Try this:

In device manager you are likely to find "Microsoft Bluetooth enumerator" or something along those lines.
Double-click Microsoft Bluetooth enumerator
Click the Driver tab, then click the Update Driver... button.
Select Install from a list or specific location then click Next.
Select Don't search. I will choose the driver to install, then click Next.
If you need to give a path to a driver it should be C:\DRIVERS\WIN\BDCACT
Select the driver without the Digital Signed icon, (the one without the small green icon to the left hand side) and click Next.
When a pop-up window appears, click the Continue Anyway button.
Click Finish to close window.

That should solve it.

HTH

One problem that I am having with the new BlueTooth is that in Device Manager, it says "BlueTooth Device #2" and Serial Connection #2.

Why is it saying that it is #2, and how can I force it to remove it?

I also suddenly lost the ability to power up my 802.11 radio through Access Connections (worked earlier), so I'm going to try reinstalling a few things.

EDIT: I was able to fix the problem with Access Connections by reinstalling the drivers, then by reinstalling the Access Connections program. However, I still have not been able to fix the BlueTooth problem. Under "MODEMS" it reads "Standard Modem over Bluetooth link #2" and under Network Adaptors, it reads "Bluetooth Device (RFCOMM Protocol TDI) #2".

I also do have two Bluetooth Radios - IBM Integrated Bluetooth III and Microsoft Bluetooth Enumerator.
