ThinkPad 11a/b/g/n (42T0825) in X60 Tablet?

#1 Post by Great Gatsby » Mon Jan 10, 2011 9:12 am

I consider changing my ThinkPad X60 Tablet's (6363-2AG) Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Mini PCI Express in favour of draft-n Wi-Fi (... and Wi-Fi under OS X as a side-effect :)). While getting into this subject, I have come across the so-called ThinkPad 11a/b/g/n Wireless LAN Mini Express Adapter (42T0825).

Hence my questions:
  • Will this card work in my X60 Tablet (6363-2AG)? Could connecting antennas become a problem (3 antenna connectors for 802.11n vs. 2 for 802.11g)? Will my ThinkPad's BIOS tolerate a 42T0825 or is it locked?
  • And finally, can anybody here positively confirm to use a 42T0825 successfully in a X60 Tablet? (... in other words anybody with more than a 'should work, but haven't tried it myself'-statement? ;-))
Thanks for all hints and comments on this (no matter how detailed they are)! :-)

I can tell you that it works for WiFi in a T60... but I found that card pretty much killed my Bluetooth connectivity, as I use several Bluetooth connected devices concurrently.

Eventually I abandoned my attempts to get it working, and gave it to Bill Morrow. In its place went an Intel 4965AGN plus a Zander BIOS flash, which is all still working very nicely in the T60.... which has been around the world with my daughter. Now she has been upgraded to an X61, the T60 is now being used by my youngest son for web development purposes.

BTW, I installed a third antenna (bought off eBay) under the palm rest on the T60...... which also worked fine as long as I didn't have my hand directly over it. Initially I put it under the right side of the palm rest and had some problems, but when I moved to the left side of the palm rest it was fine.

It may be a different proposition to find room for an antenna under the plam rest on an X60 :??:

Cheers,

Bill B.

Thanks you, Ivan and Bill, for your feedback! :-)

 I wouldn't have thought of that, but that would indeed make things rather worse than better. Thanks for mentioning it! - I assume Bluetooth connections were stable again at least when you switched off Wi-Fi separately? :?:

Yes, Intel 4965AGN with a Zender BIOS (... the ones here (?)) could be an alternative, but unfortunately the driver situation for Intel's whole series of Wi-Fi cards is problematic under Mac OS X, there are simply no working 3945ABG or 4965AGN OS X drivers for connecting to WPA(2)-encrypted WLANs. :-(

Yes, that could become a challenge. :-) The other way I've now read somewhere here on the forum was to simply not connect the card's middle connector ...
