T42p with 1600x1200 screen only displays 1400x1050

#1 Post by articfox » Thu Jan 13, 2011 2:06 pm

I recently replaced the screen on my T42p. The first time that I booted it up, the IBM boot screen did not fill up the full screen initially but after a couple of seconds it appeared that the system detected it properly and it changed to fill the entire screen and look normal. When the desktop loaded, everything was fine. I probably rebooted the system 5 times with no problems. Then, yesterday, I restarted the machine and it never "snapped out" of the only displaying 1400x1050. This is the highest resolution available under the Display settings and the screen is listed as "IBM 1400x1050 LCD Panel" in the device manager. Any ideas what may be going on?

Thanks and simulated screen shot attached (as to what it looks like to me, as Print Screen only grabs the 1400x1050--black on the right and top of desktop repeated on the bottom).

Try booting from a "live" Linux CD and see what happens...I'd suggest Mint, since I know it works out of the box on T42/p...

Good luck and keep us posted.

Thanks for the replies. I will give a linux live CD a shot and report back. I'm running XP SP2 with an ATI Mobility Fire GL T2 adapter/driver.

Hi,

What does it say in the device manager? Did you delete all of the old drivers and reinstall the drivers after the screen was installed?
Just nosey as to why you are running SP2 and Not SP3

Hi.

The device manager lists "IBM ThinkPad 1400x1050 LCD Panel"

I booted Mint from a live CD and the display looked the same a it did in XP. I was, however, able to select the 1600x1024 as a resolution (1400x1050 was still the default). When I did this, the desktop expanded horizontally to fill the black area on the right of the display. The top of the desktop was repeated in the space below the upper 1024 as before.

Have not deleted the drivers and reinstalled--would you recommend this? Was not aware of SP3 and windows update has not prompted me for some reason. Also, have not used this machine for a couple years prior to replacing the screen.

Thanks--any more ideas?

I'm going to say that the panel itself is likely SXGA+ and not UXGA....or that there's an issue of some sort with the LCD cable.

Mint detects and displays UXGA right out of the box, no adjustments needed.

Good luck.

Go into BIOS and set HV-Expansion to ON.
That should fill the black spaces.
I agree with ajkula66, that yours is more than likely an SXGA+ screen (1400x1050).

But how do you explain this:

I suspect the panel is UXGA, but the cable is SXGA+.
