t61 cpu upgade

#1 Post by ianf » Fri Jan 14, 2011 7:52 pm

hello
i have the chance of a intel t9300 SLAQG , i have checked at the intel cpu ref site and it seems to ship in the same carton , same number as the slayy , which i belive to be the cpu of choice.
has anyone tried this or could confirm that it is suitable.

thanks ian

They seem to be the same, but both come in 2 versions, BGA478 (ball grid array, useless for a laptop) and PGA478 (with pins, as required for a laptop).
Make sure it is PGA478.

sorry for delay in responding.
well the t61 board is in for repair with nick,so new cpu will have to wait, i tried to source a replacement but 15.4" are not so readily available, so fingers crossed, i did look at the intel page and came to the same conclusion but will ultimately go with the normal slay type.

thanks again ian

well !
nick ... poshgordie emailed to say T61 board is working, so next step will be to drop in the 2 x 2gb ram or go for the 4gb sticks , i wonder has anyone got a preferred module that works ok, even though 2x2 is the max, also i have got some ultra small fans , the intention is to try and keep gpu a bit cooler.

thanks ian

I bought a 4gb stick of Patriot Signature DDR2-800 RAM from Newegg and it works great. They had a 10% off sale on it today so I just bought another. That will give me 8GB total for virtual machines. If you are worried about keeping the GPU cool consider a Penryn CPU upgrade and some arctic silver. Mine never goes above 74C and it's overclocked as high as possible without artifacts.

hello techweenie
well in the UK 1 x 4gb stick patriot is about $150 ,but i found this 4 GB Hynix DDR2 800-4GB PC2-6400 DDR PC SODIMM RAM $80 , more affordable, we can't buy from newegg they will not ship out of the USA, wish they would .
its on ebay maybe a member has tried this i have bought from the states but that seller has gone,re cpu i will go the penryn route i nearly bought a t9300 but i vasilated as there was a t9500 in the end both went also looked at the extreme cores and realised iwas entering a world of fantasy and ssd would be better, but to max the ram now is prudent.

regards ian

If you start with a T61 that has a 667MHz-fsb CPU like the T7300 and upgrade it to an 800MHz-fsb CPU like the T9300, does the T61 automatically increase the FSB to 800Mhz to match, or does the new CPU still run at 667MHz-fsb?

If the FSB automatically increases to 800MHz, does that have RAM implications -- hard (667 won't work), soft (667 will run with more wait states), or otherwise?

Well, a T7300 is actually an 800MHz bus CPU. However, generally, your assumption is correct. The CPU bus will increase up to its maximum with the appropriate CPU. It will also down clock, assuming the CPU installed is supported by the BIOS.

The CPU and memory buses are independent of each other, so no issues with the CPU bus at 800MHz and the memory at 667MHz or even 533MHz, should you use PC2-4200 sodimms.

hello underclocker

that ram in the uk would cost £200 for 2x4gb if i can get that in 4gig sticks, i hope someone has experiance of the hynix above. or some thing similar.

hello all

The hynix 4gb works well , i have only fitted the one stick it is the above specs, although built on the more usual green board,
i have another on order now.
i have fitted the t9300 with middletons bios all fine and a seagate 7200/16mb/500gb win7 ult x64.
regarding the repairs to m/b that Nick carried out it all seems good and he mentions that a reflow was not a choice due to glue strips , but that the bump joint had been fixed so keep my fingers crossed.
i will fit an ssd as price drops but even with just one stick of ram this is much snapper than my t60 /2.5ghz ,2x2gb ,320 /7200 hdd and they are broadly of similar specs.
regarding the display a 15.4 is nice and this one is wsxga , but my t43 15" is very easy on the eye, the t60 is basic 14".

i hope there elements of this thread that will help others.

thanks to all ian
