Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) download available

#1 Post by GomJabbar » Sat Jan 15, 2011 7:54 am

Windows 7 Forums wrote:Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1), or KB976932, has been pre-released to OEM manufacturers and we are pleased to provide site visitors with the final version. We can confirm, with accuracy, that this is the final, official, digitally signed version of Windows 7 Service Pack 1 which has been scheduled for imminent release to manufacturers (RTM), but has not yet appeared on Windows Update. This download also includes Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1.

The 32-bit and 64-bit versions are compatible with all languages. The 64-bit version also includes the Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 RTM.

Downloaded and installed Windows 7 32-bit SP1 on my T42. No problems to report.

I have been using the SP1 RTM on Windows 7 Ultimate x64 for 3 days and works fine.

***NOTE: The Microsoft original untouched ISO image with SP1 has been leaked:
http://www.mydigitallife.info/2011/01/2 ... ted-image/

I'd recommend doing:
1. Backup your system.
2. Fresh Install of Windows 7.
3. Lenovo System Update (it doesn't work once SP1 is installed and it includes some Knowledge Base updates).
4. Install SP1 RTM.

http://www.intowindows.com has several really easy methods for making a bootable USB key for those that don't have DVD drive.

While there is an option to clean up extra files after installing SP1 I would not do it until the official Microsoft SP1 update is released just in case this is not the real RTM.

Also, this might be a good time to purchase an Intel X25-M 160 (150 usable) GB SSD drive. They can be found new on ebay for about $240. True, soon, Intel will be releasing their third generation SSD but this price (about $1.50 per GB) is already pretty good if you had wanted to go to SSD and this is enough space.

Also, 4 GB SODIMMs have come way down in price and you can upgrade to a total of 8 GB (from http://www.newegg.com) for less than $100.

Here is FURTHER UPDATE to the Windows 7 SP1 RELEASE

Please read the writing in RED at bottom of article
in Windows 7 Forum, written by its Admin.

AND i would HIGHLY recommend doing what the above: dfumento: has written

Worked nicely for me on my T510 -(home use) with FHS_multi-tch running Win7X64 with SSDs
havent testing it well under any serious LOAD CONDITIONS but most apps seems to run ok - Adobe CS5 to a small MySQL ...... etc

Cheers

System update doesn't yet work for SP1 since SP1 has not been officially released but this is a fix until then. Note the suggestion that you only have to install the part relevent to your version:

On Page 29 of the link posted by the OP there is a note confirming the SP1 is genuine. No need to worry. First download link is now no longer working.

This morning 'Windows Update' told me that there were a few new updates including SP1. I've installed it and will run it for a few days before doing the same on my wife's machine.

The genuine article is out (as noted) and anyone who installed any RC release or older must uninstall SP1 Release Candidate before installing SP1 Final.

I downloaded the X64 package (1Gb) last night and installed it. It took the better part of 2 hours to install.

This is the N'th time I have risked it all and applied a service pack to my work machine, but as in all the other cases (except for NT4 SP6), it is working fine. Why do I risk my work machine? Because it does more and has more software than the home desktop.

So all is well so far as I know. .... JDH

Its taken about 30-40 minutes for me, across several Thinkpads, when using a USB stick as the source, rather than a DVD.

Cheers,

It probably depends on what is installed. My Thinkcenter desktop went faster today. ... JDH

This creates an issue with RDC and you may get an invalid certificate warning. (WHS gives such a warning) workaround is to change options in RDC| Options | Advance | to Connect and don't warn me, hit save

I am using Remote Desktop Connection to connect to SBS2003, Server 2003 and Server 2008 with no issues. 2003 does not pop up any certificate warnings. Server 2008 does give a warning, but I am fairly sure it did prior to SP1.

I don't use WHS. ... JDH

I am doing a fresh Windows 7 install today/tomorrow.

Should I do it with the Win 7 that includes SP1 or pre-SP1 so that System Update can be installed and works?

Has anyone here used / been using RT Seven Lite (Rt7lite) to streamline, lean down and customize their Windows 7 installation on their Thinkpads?

Any suggestions on which
- Services (MS Windows 7) to not install / avoid / disable? (via RT7Lite ??)

- Drivers (MS default or Lenovo ones)
- Apps (ThinkVantage etc)

(to install via System Update)

...to install / remove / leave out?
