Putting a T41-touchpad in a T61

#1 Post by Tausen » Sat Jan 15, 2011 2:23 pm

Hi everyone, first post in these forums.
I've read the FAQ's and rules, and I did a search - so I hope I'm not breaking any rules or posting in the wrong thread or so.. If so, please let me know, I'm trying to be good ;)

Anyhow, problem is I have a Thinkpad T61 with a broken touchpad. I've got a T41-touchpad lying around, and I've been considering replacing the broken T61-touchpad with the working T41-touchpad. I was just wondering if any of you guys would happen to know if I could mess things up by doing so? There's a connector beneath the palmrest that looks the same on the T41 as the T61, so I'm guessing it *might* work...
Any of you fine gentlemen think this is all a bad idea?

Any advice is much appreciated - thanks in advance!

Kind regards,
-Tausen.

If it physically fits, I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work.

Oh yeah, and welcome to the forum.

Tausen,

if it doesn't fit, I have a mint R6x / T6x touchpad at my disposal. FRU 39T7208, came from R61. I'm from Europe, so everything can be very simple and inexpensive. PM me if you're interested in.

Alright, didn't work out. The connector fit just fine, but for some reason the touchpad didn't do anything - cursor didn't move and it didn't seem like the computer recognized the device at all.
Thank you very much for the generous offer, corvette - I'll send you a PM..

Did you plug the touchpad connector into it's motherboard socket?

Yes, I believe so. I simply unplugged the touchpad->T41 connector (under the palmrest, just to the right of the RAM) and plugged it into the T61 instead. Everything else should be intact..
I also noticed a minor difference on the connector - the connector from the T41-touchpad had something that looked like a small wire connecting two pins on the connector, while the T61-touchpad did not have this.

I did get an error when accessing the "mouse" menu in the control panel - a message saying that no connection to the synapsis driver could be made or something similar.. But I'm not sure whether this error was there before. There was no touchpad in the "ultranav" tab, and I couldn't find any options in the BIOS for enabling/disabling the touchpad.
Maybe this could be a driver-issue?

Thanks for all the help!
