x32 upgrade, what would be faster

#1 Post by mattias » Sun Jan 16, 2011 2:03 pm

I am thinking of upgrade my old x32 laptop with 1 gb of ram to 1.5 gb and an ssd hardrive from transcend. My question is what would happen? Which opperations would go faster besides start and close down of my os (linux mint 10). Are photoediting software like bibble, digikam and gimp going to run faster? Is there any point to upgrade a 5 year old computer? An upgrade as the one I mentioned are going to cost about 200 usd (150 euro) In sweden, is it worth it? I appeciate your opinions and thoughts in this matter. Thanks in advance!

More memory and SSD make all of the programs to load much faster and your computer feels like a new.

Photo editing tends to be memory intensive. I would try 2 gigs of RAM and a 7200 rpm HDD.

ssd hardrive from transcend
Does Transcend make an IDE (PATA) SSD?

Thanks, HarryC.

These drives are expensive. Especially the SLC SSD units, which are better than MLC.

If the OP really wanted to use an SSD, the most reasonable spending strategy would be to buy the 8GB SLC SSD for the boot disk and buy a big CompactFlash card for storing data.

Given the cost of the SSDs, a better upgrade might be to use a CF card with an Addonics PATA-CF adaptor as the boot drive.

Edit: this may help.

Thanks for your opinions and thoughts! My thought was to use the ssd drive for os and applications. Have a couple of extern drives to store photos etc. Is there anybody who have tried ssd drive in x32 that could tell me about the differences in speed?

Hello, have you done this upgrade? If so, what was the result?
