X40 (X41 motherboard) Not Booting UP
X40 (X41 motherboard) Not Booting UP
Hey guys, I just installed an X41 motherboard in my X40. Previously, I took my harddrive out and put it into one of those IDE to USB things. I don't remember exactly what happened but I remember Windows doing something to my harddrive.
Here's why I ask.
Now I put the harddrive back into my laptop and I get an ERROR 2010: The Hard drisk drive that you have installed has not been qualified for use in this computer or does not havelatest firmware.
It allows me to hit Esc and continue but when I do, nothing happens, screen goes black and that's it.
Basically, this sucks. Does any one have any idea?
Thank you!
UPDATE:
I know it boots up. I connected a second monitor to it and I can switch them but it switches between black screen. You can just see that's it's a black screen, lightly lit (as opposed to a black screen that is turned off).

Re: X40 (X41 motherboard) Not Booting UP
i have a couple of 20 gig drives sitting here that will work in an x40 but won't work in an x41. 2010 error. but, it boots past that and loads windows.
i tried taking a working harddrive out of an x40 and putting it in an x41 to see if it will load windows and it won't, black screen. i tried taking one out of an x41 and putting it in an x40, same thing, won't load windows. different hardware, i guess.
we don't know what windows did to your hard drive while it was in your adapter.
an x40 version of windows won't boot up into an x41 and vice versa. at least that's what i found.
i guess some of the older hard drives won't work in an x41. i don't think that there's any firmware anywhere for any of these older drives.

So what if I put in a Windows CD (I have the base), and boot from that and re-install windows?topmahof wrote:i have a couple of 20 gig drives sitting here that will work in an x40 but won't work in an x41. 2010 error. but, it boots past that and loads windows.

Do you know where I can get an X41 hard drive for cheap?

here's some. yeh, you can reload windows, get all your stuff off the drive first and then try to load windows on it. you should be able to get past the hard drive error. you can disable the error in the bios. it might just work. you can also try the marketplace here, i remember seeing 1.8 hard drives there for sale, maybe there's still some there. how big is your drive anyway. i've never had 40 or 60 gig drives not work in any x41's. only certain 20 gigs. you could also do a diagnostic from the bios and see if it finds anything.

just did that and at least i got it to boot....but the error is still there. I have a 40GB Hitachi Travelstar C4K40 DK13FA-40 ATA-100.
How would I do a diagnostic from the BIOS, i'm there right now and I don't see that option?
Re: X40 (X41 motherboard) Not Booting UP
Been at this for hours now...
Got this message when I tried updating my bios:
The diskette in the default drive will not run on this system. You system is now locked. To restart your system, press Ctrl+Alt+Del.
Then in my bios...I don't have a system-unit serial number. From what I read, I need a Hardware Maintenance Diskette....
Is there anyway I can do this without a Floppy drive? Please be merciful....

Re: X40 (X41 motherboard) Not Booting UP
There is a no-2010 BIOS available for both X41 and T43, do a search on the forum.
You can't get rid of the 2010 error without flashing to special patched BIOS, no matter what you do.
And operating system installed on X40 doesn't work when just swapping HDD to X41 because of different chipset etc. It gives BSOD.

here's a link to the no-2010.
in the bios, under startup, you can change boot mode to diagnostic, you can change the error notification to not require having to press escape.
but the error will be still there. you need to do the no-2010. these hacks are easy to do with a floppy, a little harder with a disc. you really oughta get a cheap floppy drive.
you can still load windows and make sure everything works. but you'll have to run the mod eventually.

Buy a USB floppy drive and a USB CD/DVD drive.
Or if you have a CD/DVD drive in another Thinkpad, buy the matching USB enclosure for it, and use that.
You can use those on any laptop or PC.
Like Raceboy said, X40 and X41 are not compatible. You need to install from scratch.

Thanks guys. But does this error do anything? Is my HD limited in any way because of it? I changed it so that I don't have to press Esc every time and the sound disappeared too.

Update the BIOS to get rid of that 2010 error.
It won't do any harm leaving it, but it will get annoying after a while.
