January 2011 brain teaser

#1 Post by killer » Tue Jan 18, 2011 3:03 pm

It seems about time for another one ...

I was in London.
I left Trafalgar Square at five minutes past six o'clock in the evening.
At what time did I arrive at Waterloo railway station?

Do those of us on this side of the Atlantic need a map of the London underground to make the calculation?

That would depend very much on which specific Waterloo railway station that was not in London.........

It makes no difference ... but I was referring to the railway terminus just over the Thames via Waterloo Bridge.

The answer is in the question.

Depends upon the direction of travel; Trafalgar Square to Waterloo or Waterloo to Trafalgar Square...

It makes no difference.

Everyone is thinking far too logically. The solution is arrived at by lateral thinking. That's the fun with brain teasers. 8)

Congratulations, poshgeordie, you are spot on!

For those still puzzled all you needed was a reference to history. Trafalgar was a battle in 1805 (= five minutes after six in the evening using the 24 hour clock).
Waterloo was a battle in 1815.

Now there will probably be a torrent of, "That's not fair!" In response I did say, "think laterally".

Anyway, I hope it lightened the dark winter days in the northern hemisphere.

Its not a solution that can be deduced by thinking, and as such is not genuine brain teaser or puzzle!

Bill, poshgeordie might argue that he sorted it out by thinking ... could he do it without thinking?

Did it tease a few brains? If so, it is a brain teaser. QED.

I hate you.

Kidding aside, that wasn't bad, although I suppose it does show up exactly how lacking my knowledge of 19th century history is!
